Thomas Hoffmeister Obituary
Mr. Thomas Mahan Hoffmeister, 91, of 3771 Point of Rocks Road, Point of Rocks, formerly of Philadelphia, Pa., Bristol, Pa., and Landover, died Saturday, May 15, at his home.
He was the husband of Ethel Lu Edelman Hoffmeister, who died March 18, 1998.
Born April 29, 1908, in Philadelphia, he was a son of the late John Fernard Sr. and Katharine Genevieve Hoffmeister.
Mr. Hoffmeister graduated in 1934 from the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Economics and attended Villanova College and Drexel Institute of Philadelphia.
He was a sole proprietor certified public accountant who had practiced his profession until last week. His longtime friend and associate, Carlo Rota, had worked with him since 1949. His office had been located in Hyattsville, Washington, D.C., Silver Spring, Gaithersburg and most recently at his home.
Mr. Hoffmeister had worked as a Realtor. He had also worked in the Federal Reserve Bank, in the General Accounting Office as an auditor, and with Social Security as one of the first field auditors in the 1930s.
He had also worked for W.T. Cowen Trucking, was a special assistant to the president of the University of Maryland in the late 1940s, and started Prince George's Sand and Gravel business near Laurel, later adding Admix Concrete Inc.
Mr. Hoffmeister had been a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Maryland Certified Public Accountants and Western Maryland Association of Public Accountants, where he served as both secretary and president. He was also president of Prince George's County Board of Trade, secretary of Point of Rocks Ruritan Club and a member of Frederick County Rock Club.
After his family, he enjoyed attending to his farm and caring for the grounds until age 90, reading, researching history, traveling, and riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle until the age 85.
Surviving are three daughters, Catherine Clevenger of Highland, Grace Stanton and husband William A. of Dayton, and Ethel Lee Scotto and husband Frank J. of Point of Rocks; eight grandchildren, Clifton L. and Caren L. Clevenger, Cheryl L. Stanton O'Toole, Thomas A. and William W. Stanton, Jeannette L. Stanton Keller, Kathleen Joy Stanton Manos, and James Mahan Scotto; 12 great-grandchildren, Lance C., Crystal L., Brent and Todd M. Clevenger, Seamus R. O'Toole, Andrew R., Christopher W. and Chelsea H. Stanton, Megan and Ryan J. Keller, and John P. and Brian W. Manos; one sister, Margaret M. Hoffmeister Orr of Philadelphia; and three nieces and nephews, John F. Hoffmeister III of Albuquerque, N.M., Katherine Margaret Orr Silvasi of Durham, N.C., and James Orr of West Orange, N.J.; and one sister-in-law, Daisey Edelman Hayden.
Mr. Hoffmeister will also be remembered by special friends, Carolo Rota, Warren Fry, Mary Jane Baker, Ray Staub, Evelyn Edmunds and Nadia Mendola.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, May 17, at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick, where funeral services will begin at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 18. The Rev. Mary McCall-Mock will officiate.
Interment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick.
