Joan Moxley Obituary

Joan Tannehill Moxley
Gainesville - Joan Tannehill Moxley, of Gainesville, known as Jodie to her friends, passed away on February 7, 2021 due to complications of COVID-19. She was 88. Jodie was preceded in death by her husband, C.C. Moxley, in 2005. She is survived by her son, David Moxley of Gainesville, her daughter, Laura Moxley Quilici of Austin, stepsons James Moxley of Naples and Robert Moxley of Gainesville, and three grandchildren. She is also survived by her half siblings, John Tannehill of Oviedo and Sally Thomas of Pittsburgh. She was a resident of Gainesville for over 60 years.
Jodie was born Joan Borland Tannehill in Warren, PA on March 12, 1932. She was the only child of Dorothy Jane Engroff Tannehill and John McClintock Tannehill, although her father later remarried and had two additional children. At the age of eight, Jodie moved to St. Petersburg, Florida to live full-time with her grandparents. As a youth, she spent her winters in Florida and her summers in Pennsylvania with many loving members of her extended family. Her adult life was spent primarily in Gainesville.
Jodie held an M.A. in Rehabilitative Counseling from the University of Florida, and she spent a lifetime listening to and caring for others. In 1967, she married C.C. (Carey) Moxley, an agriculture-extension professor with the University of Florida IFAS. Along with Carey, she was an entrepreneur and world traveler. Among other ventures, Jodie was co-developer of the Creston House condominium in Crescent Beach and the Tannahill subdivision in west Gainesville. She was also co-owner of Tower Travel and Cruises in Gainesville and enjoyed traveling all over the world. Jodie was a longtime member of Trinity United Methodist church, where she served as a Stephen Minister and usher. She was a member of the Gainesville Health and Fitness Center, where she made many cherished friends. She was an avid hobbyist and pursued interests that included genealogy, sculpting, gardening, running, and antiques. Jodie was an enthusiastic reader and channeled her love of people into an extensive interest in biographies. Most especially, Jodie was a loving, attentive wife, mother and grandmother, and she was an advocate for dogs and wildlife. Jodie was a cheerful neighbor and a compassionate friend, and she will be greatly missed.
The family invites you to pay your respects at the Trinity UMC Memorial Garden. Memorial donations can be made to the Alachua County Humane Society.
