Dorothy,
You will be missed by our family. I always remember when John Shoemaker Jr. was in the hospital and you were drawing or sketching. Those children were being naughty. They started watching you and ask you what you were doing? You told them to draw what they see. I've always admired your gift for art. James Raymond Sr. has a very empty place in his heart for you.

My Dearest Dorothy,
I do not know how to put into words how much I miss you. I loved your laugh, your sweet smile, your jokes, your delicious recipes, which I can never make quite like you, your creative and colorful paintings, your sense of style, your love of the color purple, your amazing intellect, your caring and generous personality, your passion for gardening and for growing flowers, your deep love of your family, your uplifting advice, your warm embraces, your teaching spirit, and most of all your love as my “other” mom. I miss seeing you standing in your studio at your easel, painting away, loving every minute of it, I miss seeing you in the kitchen eating your breakfast, drinking your one cup of coffee, reading the newspaper, I miss hearing your warm voice on the phone asking how we are doing, I miss your email jokes, I miss seeing you sitting on the couch watching tv with James. I will miss our long talks about photography, art, and our family and friends. I learned so much from you in the last 15.5 years. You were amazing how you could fit right in with any crowd of people. You were always concerned about others even when you were sick. You tried as hard as you could to stay here with us so you could watch your grandsons grow up. You were such a wonderful grandmother to Raymond Matthew. He loved coming to visit and spend time with his granny and grandpa. He loved telling people that HIS granny was an artist. He loved when you started teaching him how to draw and paint. You were so patient with him. I want you to know that he will not wear the t-shirt that he wore the day you went to Heaven. He loves you so very much. He knew that he could always count on his granny to take special care of him and love him like nobody else. I am grateful for having you as my mother-in-law, I could not have asked for one any better. Your love was over-flowing in everything you did. I miss so very much. Know that you will always be right here in my heart. I know that you are having a wonderful time in Heaven. I know that I will see you again there one day. I love you dearly Dorothy.

To James and Family,
I was so saddened to hear about Dorothy. I took an art class from her many years ago and we have remained friends from a distance ever since. She called ever so often to catch up. I had no idea she was so sick. I am so sorry that I had not been in touch recently. She always inspired me and I was in awe of her beautiful work. She was a treasure to the arts community and will be sorely missed. Please know that you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. I will never forget the wonderful person that she was.

Dorothy and I started out in this world 2 weeks apart and grew up together, seeing each other as often as possible. Kitty and my mother, Mozelle, were 1st cousins, and close, so we saw each other frequently. A favorite memory was spending the weekend at "Kitty and Alberts" and sleeping on pallets on the floor. We always had a fun time. I was always a little jealous of her artistic abilities, which were so much better than mine. We lost touch with each other in the last few years and I was so sorry to hear of her illness and death. Our sincerest sympathy to all of the family. With love and compassion,
Martha (Snead) and Tom Hundley

I met Dorothy when i worked at Look Real Estste, Verlene had alot of her paintings, one year for Christmas we had no idea on what to get Verlene, since she had everything, so i called Dorothy, and told her Verlene had totally remodeled the outside of her home, and i had a picture of it, she did a water color painting of her newly designed house, and she did a picture for us, and we had it framed, Verlene thought that was the most awesome gift. Dorothy was a wonderful person, and my prayer's go out to the entire family. God bess you all.

One of my most treasured possessions is a painting Dorothy did for me many, many years ago. She was at an arts festival in the park here in town. I described my display of caladiums and old logs which I had in my yard. She painted a beautiful picture from my description. It is even more precious now that I've learned, sadly, of her passing. God rest her soul and peace be with the familly.

Dorothy always had a kind word, a moment to stop for family and friends, a gentle spirit and an amazing talent. She will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her.

I loved her jokes; her lilting voice; her tiny, delicate hands; her love for all things french - herbs de provence, chocolate croissants, the french countryside; her curly blonde hair; her passion for gardening; her love of her grandchildren; her love of collecting copper pots; her love of nature - spiders, birds, snakes, and dangerous terrain (smile) and, most of all, her love of creating something new.

Since the day my family attended the wedding of Dorothy and Raymond, she has been a member of my family. I will always remember her warm nature, unique spirit and highly talented abilities. She was a great support to me when we lost my dad and my sister and I shall always treasure her for being there during those times. I loved her and will miss her.
