Barbara McCallum Obituary

Barbara Marshall McCallum
December 19, 1931 - November 3, 2016
Barbara "Bobbie" McCallum was born December 19, 1931, in Hollister, California to Elsie Davis McCallum and Roy Drummond McCallum. Later, their lovely Spanish style home was listed in the National Registry of Historic Places. She attended the local schools and studied classical piano. She was Valedictorian of her high school graduating class.
Barbara briefly attended Stanford University, then transferred and graduated from the University of California at Berkeley. She was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority. She married Griffith Owen Marshall; they later divorced. They lived in Orinda, Fresno, and Tiburon, California. Her greatest pleasure was her children, Andrea, Elliott and Julia. She was proud of their many accomplishments. She took an active part in their youth organizations, including forming and leading a 4-H Club. Barbara also continued her interest in piano playing and enjoyed landscape oil painting. Her first painting was selected as a finalist in a jury-selected exhibit of California artists.
While living in the San Francisco Bay Area, her career was as an Interior Designer. Later, she moved to Pebble Beach and enlarged her clientele in the Monterey area. Barbara also wrote several books on the life and times of Mary Magdalene (unpublished).
When her mother became ill, Barbara returned to her family home in Hollister, California to care for her. While there she changed her career and was an Administrative Assistant for an agricultural firm. One of her more interesting jobs was the distribution of 3.2 million in grants to international government and university groups for atmospheric studies. She also became very actively involved in preserving San Benito County's rich agricultural land. She was listed in Two Thousand Notable American Women (5th ed.). During her career, Barbara also received a Certificate of Recognition as an Outstanding Citizen from the State of California Assembly.
Twelve years later, Barbara moved to Grand Junction, Colorado. She continued with specialized computer work for a few years. Then upon retirement, she resumed her interest in landscape painting and gardening. She also was a long-time member of the Clan MacCallum-Malcolm Society of North America, Inc. in memory of her Scottish ancestors.
She will be buried at a private service in California at Sunset View Cemetery in the family plot of her parents and paternal grandparents.

In the brief period of taking care of Barbara I met a woman that made a great impact on me. She was gracious, enchanting, and a joy to be with. I was treated to a short time of making a friend that will remain in my heart.
