Mary Horner Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Garnand Funeral Homes - Garden City on Mar. 16, 2026.
Mary Darlene (Bowen) Horner, 89, died on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City, Kansas. She was born December 28, 1936, to Dean Martin & Birdie Dolla (Scholfield) Bowen in Garden City, Kansas. She attended Garden City schools and graduated from Garden City High School in May of 1955. The summer after graduation, she met the love of her life, George Horner at church camp, and married him on November 25, 1955, in Clayton, New Mexico. They spent most of their married life on the family farm raising 5 children – David, Paul, Ruby, Tim, and Irma.

Her Savior Jesus was first place in her heart, then family, friends, and church. She was a faithful church member serving many roles over the years; Sunday School teacher, Bible School Leader, Board member, Secretary, Willing Workers, as well as attending services and women's prayer meetings. Mary especially loved teaching her Sunday School Class and taking them on special outings after they had learned their memory verses. She loved each child; they were very important to her. She was especially thrilled when they accepted Christ into their hearts. She enjoyed being a Den Mother of Cub Scouts and helping coach Little League Baseball. Her greatest joy was being a prayer warrior and seeing many miracles and answers to prayers. She lived her life by her favorite Bible Verse, Proverbs 3:5-6.

Mary Darlene was very involved in her children's activities throughout their school years. She also enjoyed sports (Go Chiefs), gardening, flowers, fishing, writing skits, fishing, and activities with family and friends.

She is survived by her 3 sons Dave (Lola) Horner of Lakin, KS, Paul (Rachael) Horner of Salina, KS, and Tim Horner of Lakin, KS; 2 daughters Ruby (Kevin) Ivey of Garden City, KS and Irma (Del) Kahre of Pueblo West, CO; 10 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; as well as 2 sisters Chalcia Ellen Hubbard of Amarillo, TX and Cheryl Martin of Grand Junction, CO; and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband George who died on June 23, 2005. She is also preceded in death by her parents; brothers Clyde, Art, Ray, Dwane, LeRoy, and Billy Dean; and 1 granddaughter Jenifer Michele Horner.

Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, March 20, 2026, at First Assembly of God in Garden City, Kansas, with Pastor MacKenzie Witzke officiating. The service may also be viewed on Facebook Live on the Garnand Funeral Home Facebook page. Burial will follow at the Lakin Cemetery in Lakin, Kansas. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City.
