Robert Rossberg Obituary

Robert Steven Rossberg

Anchorage, AK —Robert Steven Rossberg, 60, of Anchorage, Alaska, died Thursday, May 1, 2014 while kayaking on the White Salmon River in White Salmon, Washington.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2014 at 2:00 pm at the Episcopal Church of the Incarnation in Great Falls. A private inurnment will be held at Manchester Cemetery. A celebration of life will also be held in Anchorage, Alaska the first week of June.

Robert was born in Great Falls on February 9, 1954, to Robert Rossberg and Muriel "Mickey" Rossberg.

Steve served our country as a member of the US Army and proudly joined the elite group of soldiers - the Special Forces Green Beret. After the Army he finished school at Montana State University and received his degree in Mechanical Engineering. He would soon after work his way up to a drilling manager at one of the largest oil fields - Prudhoe Bay.

Steve was a long-time resident of Anchorage, AK, where he lived for the majority of time since leaving Great Falls. He was at home in the wilderness of Alaska and endlessly devoted himself to sports and outdoor lifestyle.

Steve enjoyed skiing, hunting, cycling, Pinot Noir, and in the last 10 years devoted himself to white water kayaking - hands down, his favorite pursuit.

Steve is survived by his mother Muriel "Mickey" Rossberg; his son, Kelly Rossberg; two brothers, Richard and Keith Rossberg; several nephews; and Doreen Rossberg.

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Rossberg.

Memorials may be made to American Whitewater, PO Box 1540, Cullowhee, NC 28723; Wounded Warrior Project at www.woundedwarriorproject.org (also PO Box 75817, Topeka, KS 66675); or Episcopal Church of the Incarnation, 600 3rd Ave N, Great Falls, MT 59401.

David and I met Steve when we were 22 and living in Wyoming. Steve introduced David to the river and taught him to kayak, raft and fly fish. I know some of David's fondest memories include Steve and that when he is on the river he always thinks of Steve. We loved and admired him and are so sad he's gone too soon. May you find peace and comfort.

Steve was the "motivator" every time I kayaked with him. He was always up for another trip down the river and his enthusiasm was contagious. He will be missed dearly by all his kayaking friends.

The paddling community has lost one of the greats. Having Steve on the river was like having a guardian angel waiting around the bend. May peace and love be with his family.

We'll miss seeing Steve, that stealthy mystery boater who'd show up out of nowhere and then disappear just as quick, but he'll always be with us - not forgotten.

May G-d bless & hold you safely as you continue your pursuits in the life beyond. We had a great son who I'm sure will make you proud. Thank you for teaching him skills that I could not; for that I'm forever grateful.
