Douglas Larson Obituary

Larson, Douglas Lincoln

Douglas Lincoln Larson, 91, passed away peacefully after a full, rewarding life, on April 1, 2017. He was born on February 10, 1926 in Sturgeon Bay, the second of five children of Lincoln and Mathilda (Peschel) Larson.

Doug entered the United States Army Medical Corp in 1945, after graduating from Sturgeon Bay High School. He served as a surgical technician for 18 months. Following his discharge as a private first class, Doug attended Carroll College earning a degree in English and a teaching certificate. Fate intervened, launching him on his journalism career at the Door County Advocate for 10 years and eventually the editorial staff of the Green Bay Press Gazette for 24 years.

Winning several awards throughout his career and a Pulitzer nomination, he is best remembered for his career long column, Doug's Dugout, entertaining generations with his one-liner humor well past retirement.

Doug married Phyllis Steffens Vander Bloemen in 1963, and together they raised four children.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis; children, Debbie (Tom) Schultz, Carla (Dave) Swanson, Daniel (Jennifer) Larson, Jenny (Keith) Runnoe; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild, and one great-great-great-granddaughter. He is further survived by his brother, Glen (the late, Trudy) Larson and two sisters, Delores (the late, Einar) Evenson and June Larson, all of Sturgeon Bay.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Hazel Larson.

Florence sends her sympathy to Phyllis and family. She enjoyed all the times she shared with Doug at the table during meal time.
Her favorite story was when he said-"there are some many old people here, i feel out of place! How about you Florence!"
He was a wonderful, sweet and kind man.
Bless his heart!
I send my sincerest Sympathy to you Phyllis!

My condolences to the family of a true gentleman and gifted writer. I grew up reading Doug's Dugout in the Advocate and worked under his direction at the Press-Gazette. He made a wonderful mark on Wisconsin journalism. Thanks for sharing him.

Although a quiet presence, he never failed to send the message of love. Rest peacefully.
