Peter Callahan Obituary

PETER J. CALLAHAN long-time Old Greenwich resident, died August 20, 2008 at age 77 from the effects of Multiple Myeloma. Mr. Callahan was retired from McGraw Hill Corporation, where he had been advertising sales manager for Business Week Magazine, and published a financial news letter for his clients. Earlier at McGraw Hill, he served as marketing director for Fleet Owner Magazine. Formerly he had been an investment advisor first at Kidder Peabody & Co., and then at Shearson Hayden Stone in Greenwich, where he met his wife Suzanne. Mr. Callahan who grew up in Troy, NY, graduated from LaSalle Institute, where he was Commandant of Cadets, and Williams College, class of '52. While at Williams he played several varsity sports, including baseball, skiing and football, and was named Little All American defensive end. After Williams her served in the Air Force as second lieutenant from 1952 through 1954 with the Strategic Air Command in Africa. Mr. Callahan also earned his MBA at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, and later attended MIT Senior Sloan Executive Program while working for American Metal Climax, later known as AMAX, Inc. An accomplished sportsman all his life, he enjoyed tennis, skiing and road biking. He biked for good causes, especially for the Special Olympics, raising money by biking several times from Westchester County, NY to Vermont in two days in the Tour de Wagner. After he retired, Mr. Callahan began driving for Call-A-Ride of Greenwich, and was named driver of the year in 2007. He was on the Board of Directors of CAR, in charge of fund raising. Peter Callahan is survived by his wife of 32 years, Suzanne; a sister and two brothers, Patricia Corrigan of McLean, VA; Joseph, of Tarrytown, NY; and Daniel of Steamboat Springs, CO. Other survivors include three children, Carolyn Carroll, of Carlisle, MA, Peter Jr., of Norwalk, CT, and William of Bozeman, Mont.; a stepson, Stein-Erik Soelberg of Atlanta, GA; six grandchildren and two step grandchildren. His first marriage ended in divorce. There will be a memorial service on Friday, September 12th at 2:00PM at the First Presbyterian Church, 1 West Putnam Avenue, Greenwich, CT.
