Carl Traub Obituary

Carl Franz Traub, CCIM, SIOR, 62, husband of Regan MacBain Traub of Essex, died at home with his wife at his side on Monday, (October 20, 2003). Born in Roslyn, Long Island, NY, he was the son of Carl and Mildred Bertanzel. Following his father's death when Carl was eight years old, upon his mother's remarriage to Dr. Eugene Traub, Carl and his sister Sandra were adopted by their stepfather. Carl was a graduate of Valley Forge Military Academy and the University of Tennessee. President of Traub & Co., New Haven, Traub's 40 year career was committed to commercial real estate, a field in which he was highly regarded for his integrity and business acumen. Prior to establishing his own firm, he served as vice president of Cushman & Wakefield, launching their Connecticut operations. Carl retired from the U.S. Navy in 1991, holding the rank of commander. During his three years of active duty, he served in Vietnam. He remained in the Naval Reserves, teaching at the Naval War College, and serving as a member of the Blue & Gold team interviewing candidates for Annapolis and Officer Training School. Carl was an accomplished sailor, campaigning his Tartan 40 sloop Grand Cru in Off Soundings, Long Island Sound. For the past decade, he dedicated his weekends to spending time on his trawler Grand Cru. He served as regatta chair and rear commodore for the Watch Hill Yacht Club. He was also a member of the Essex Yacht Club, the New York Yacht Club, and was on the board of governors of the Quinnipiack Club. Gifted with a wonderful sense of humor and appreciating the challenge of the sea, he took pleasure in sharing the joy of being on the water with his family and friends. He will be greatly missed by his two daughters, Vanessa "Reeve" Stein, New York, NY, and Eugenie "Gigi" Ronayne, Napa, CA; three grandchildren, Luke Stein, Olivia Ronayne, and Zeke Stein; mother Mildred Onsager, Palm Beach, FL; sister Sandra Renehan, West Palm Beach, FL, brother Eugene Traub, Wellington, FL, and sister Claire Conant, Darien. His memorial service for family and close friends will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 25, at the Watch Hill Chapel, Watch Hill, RI. A reception will follow at the Watch Hill Yacht Club. Memorial donations may be made to the CJD Foundation, P.O. Box 5312 Akron, Ohio 44334, or the Carl Traub Education Fund for Real Estate Professionals, care of New Haven Savings Bank Trust Dept., 195 Church St., New Haven, CT 06510.
