Susan Foote Obituary

Susan Green Foote, 75, died peacefully with her children at her side on Saturday, April 19th, 2014. She was affectionately known by all as "Toodie." Toodie was born in Mexico, Missouri on November 7, 1938 to Robert Stafford Green and Susan Keays Green. She attended elementary and middle school in Mexico, MO before spending four years at The Westover School in Middlebury, CT. After graduation from Connecticut College with a B.A., she worked in San Francisco for several years before relocating to New York City to work in the Missouri Pavilion for the 1964/65 World's Fair. A resident of Connecticut since 1966, she lived first in New Milford, then Hartford, Lyme, and eventually settling in Old Lyme where she has made her home for over 40 years. Toodie was an avid cook and loved to entertain. She was a talented artist and an accomplished calligrapher. She loved her homes, and extensively remodeled five houses over the last forty-six years. A dedicated volunteer, she was an active member of The Colonial Dames and the Old Lyme Historical society, The Lyme Academy of Fine Arts Volunteer Committee and The Child and Family Agency. She was a founding member of the Old Lyme Women's Exchange. Her most recent project was the creation of a wildly successful cookbook titled "The Dames Dish it Up" that served as a fundraiser for The Webb Deane Stevens museum in Wethersfield. Toodie's heritage included farmland in Elkhart, Illinois where she was a frequent visitor. She loved the land, the farmers, and the business of farming. 22 years ago she became a founding partner of the Elkhart Grain Company which was formed to purchase the local grain elevator. She was proud to be part of a talented team that has overseen the extraordinary growth and success of this enterprise which provides a vital service to the local farmer. Toodie was a great Mom, the best one could ever hope for. Her children and grand-children always came first, her blessings and boundless love for them was unequivocal. It has been said: "in those they have blessed, they live life again" and so she is with us even now. She is survived by her son Robert Stafford Green Cashman of Old Lyme, her daughter and son in law Johanna Cashman Calcagni and Steven John Calcagni of Cheshire, two grandchildren, Keays Gillett Calcagni and John Douglas Calcagni of Cheshire, her sisters Elizabeth Green McCutcheon of Greenwich, New Jersey and Nancy Green White of Denver, Colorado and former husband Peter Lenihan Cashman of Milford. She was pre-deceased by former husband Richard Lindsay Foote. A memorial service is planed for Friday, May 9th, 2014 at 2:00pm the First Congregational Church of Old Lyme. Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home, Old Lyme is handling the arrangements. Please visit www.fultontherouxoldlyme.com for photos, tributes, directions and more service information.

I remember Toodie so clearly where we were in the same class at Westover. I was able to visit with her several times since 1956 at reunions and always felt that no time at all had passed! Toodie was always upbeat, cheerful and serene. As I get older, I appreciate more and more the things and people that are consistent. At boarding school one shares a very special experience, and Toodie and I were able to look at things in perspective and have a laugh. Her family has my deepest sympathy. I know you will miss her dearly. Lyn Higgins Williams - Sag Harbor, NY

Dear Toodie, it's been an honor and a privilege to be of service to you these past years, but beyond that I shall miss our reminisces from time to time. Our shared memories back to the our little investment club...we never did buy kaymart or crispy cream donuts stock!!! All those delicious "treats" you baked for us at the office. You will be sadly missed and hold a special place in my heart.

I am deeply saddened by the loss of Toodie. She was a very special lady with a very warm heart. I have many great memories of holidays at her home and her exceptional skills as a hostess. I know that I am not the only person that will miss her and remember a remarkable mother and friend.
