Gladys Dunn Obituary

Gladys Bovino Dunn, 89, of West Hartford, Connecticut, passed away peacefully at home on November 5, 2018, from pancreatic cancer. She was the widow of Dr. Robert E. Dunn, who passed away in July 2017. They were married for 59 years. Despite her diagnosis in October 2016, Gladys continued to live a full life for over two years, characterized by her positive spirit, determination and dignity. Gladys was born in Westfield, New Jersey, the daughter of Hannah Brandt Bovino and Peter J. Bovino. A graduate of Westfield, N. J. High School, she continued her education at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine where she earned a B.A. in Sociology. She was on the staff of the Westfield, N.J. YWCA as a teenage program director for three years and then spent two years at the New Haven, Connecticut YWCA in a similar position. In 1956, she began her career in education as an elementary teacher in West Hartford at Sedgwick, Braeburn, Aiken and Charter Oak Schools. In 1960, she received an M.A. in Education from the University of Hartford and in 1969, a Sixth Year in Guidance from the University of Hartford. Upon receiving this degree, Gladys became a guidance counselor at King Philip Junior High School and Middle School until her retirement in 1990. After their retirement from West Hartford schools, she and Bob spent five years in Seoul, South Korea where Gladys was director of admissions, testing and advanced placement, and Bob was deputy headmaster, at the Seoul International School. In 1995, they returned to West Hartford to enjoy their second retirement. Gladys and Bob were avid world travelers, immersing themselves into other cultures and learning about foreign education systems. They enjoyed thirteen years of winter retreats in Waikiki, Hawaii. Gladys was active in many professional, church and community organizations and maintained a strong lifelong relationship with Bates College. Gladys leaves behind to mourn her a very wide circle of lifelong friends. Contributions in Gladys Dunn's memory may be directed to the Gladys B. and Robert E. Dunn Fund for Youth Leadership at The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, 10 Columbus Boulevard, Hartford, CT 06106. Per Gladys' wishes, there will be no services. Burial will be private. Gladys was so lovely and caring. I miss our talks and her ready smile. She was always interested in learning and in people. Such a loss.

I first came to know Gladys through Bob, who was my high school principal at the time. Over the years, long after I had left WH, they maintained a special bond with my family. I will never forget them for taking the time to visit my mother while she spent the last years of her life in a nursing home.

After Bob passed away, I stayed in touch with Gladys via phone and email. Even in the face of her cancer diagnosis, she was more interested in hearing about what I was doing. That was typical of her extraordinary selflessness and concern for others. I will miss her kind, gentle way but I will hold her memory dear.

Rest In Peace, Gladys.

Gladys was a wonderful, vibrant, caring person. She was so interesting in any conversation. Her travel experience with Bob provided her with endless stories that kept us all enthralled. I will miss her kind smile and the interest she showed in everyone she met. We will miss her.
Peace be with you now, Gladys!
