Jim Lance was a wonderful teacher and as a former Navy SEAL transferred his respect for the power of the ocean as a demanding yet kind SCUBA and sailing instructor. I am so grateful for his opening the underwater world to me so many years ago.

During your lifetime, there may be a few select individuals that have an indelible impact on your life. Dr. Lance was one of them. I completed the Scuba certification course with Dr. Lance at the University of Miami in May of 1984. He was a passionate teacher and an effective communicator of knowledge. He left me with a rock solid foundation in understanding the principles of scuba diving and its impacts on human physiology. His teaching passion inspired me to learn with great enthusiasm and dedication. One of the principles he taught us was to never ascend faster than one foot per second to the surface of the water. I recall one session in the pool when Maria, one of the students, was going up too fast to the surface and I grabbed her leg to slow down her descent and he observed my action. He saw me doing this and commended me for this action. This is a fond memory that I have never forgotten in my interaction with Dr. Lance. My incessant thirst and quest for acquiring the scuba skills and knowledge and Dr. Lance's teaching methods lead me to excel in his class and he named me the best student in the class. Thank you Dr. Lance for your dedication to education and for your service to the United States as a Navy veteran.
