I did not know him but recently saw a story about him and he lived his life during difficult times but made it a good like by saving wild mustangs. I appreciate his efforts. He seems like he was a true cowboy in every sense of the word.

My daughter and I went to South Dakota to visit the Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary in July of 2015. I was completely overcome with the beauty of this place. I have not been the same since returning back to Ohio. I got to meet Mr. O'Hyde while visiting and had him sign my book. He was so gracious and simply said can't sign so fast at my age anymore. I could only thank him for what he has done for these wild ones and so much more. He was one of the special ones and will be missed!

My husband and I had the privilege of visiting The Wild Horse Sanctuary a few years ago. We had a wonderful tour and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We didn't get to meet Dayton Hyde, but last night we watched the first half of his movie biography. Just now, I said to my husband, I'm going to look him up.
Damn! We didn't know he had passed.
He was such a charming man. We were especially touched by his story about Alfred Noyes who was himself touched by young Dayton's knowledge of birds. As an old English teacher, I was always happy to offer "The Highwayman" to my students.

I have just spent all night reading Sandy and I have to say its the best book I have ever read. This man had a huge heart and I am so sorry he is gone. Bless you his family. Great writer. Great spirit. A hero in my book. Like him, I take care of wildlife for many years. It has enriched my life.

I read His book
The Pastures Of Beyond
It is now in My top 5 favorite books that I have read. I have now started a search for his other books.
There should be more of if any of his stories published.
His humble writing is such a change from this rough and tough world.
He now waits and Lives In GOD's great Pasture with glory and rest In Our Father in Heaven and His most beautiful creation THE HORSE.....

I didn't know him, but after reading one of his books I was hooked. I wish I could have met him. His literature has emotion without sentimentality, and understands the essence of the joy of being. I will never forget his love for coyotes, especially Coy. I think Dayton Hyde is reunited with his animal friends in another sphere. I hope so. I would like to join all of them one day.

In the 1970's I lived in Klamath Falls and worked for PNB. I fell in love with Daytons writings on Coyote's and to teach others the value of the Coyote. Even today I stop and watch the trickster do his work keeping the ground critters in check. I think if it had not been for Dayton and the writing's on the coyote all the levies around Klamath Lake would have washed away years ago, they are a necessary nuisance and get a bad rap. Over the last 12 years I have followed the Daily Coyote and think of Dayton and his love of the wild. He gave us a treasure in his writing's, I have them all even the Last Free Man, and the last video of him with the wild horses. His passing saddens me we have lost a treasure and a great humanitarian, a builder of Dam's and the love of all that is wild.

My deepest sympathy to the family in Oregon and Susan and the legions of friends and co-workers at the Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary on the loss of Dayton, a true horseman, horse lover, visionary', author, and friend.
Our wild horses have lost a great champion, but I know that Susan will carry on his cherished work and continue to preserve and protect America's Living Legends.
My four summers helping at IRAM and wonderful visits since have always been enriched by time spent learning from Dayton. He opened my eyes to the Importance of family ties for wild horse bands. Most people never see interactions of entire bands or herds of horses. His wisdom and legacy will live on in the beautiful bend of the Cheyenne River.
Thank you, Dayton.

This wonderful man worked and fought so hard for so many years to make his dreams and visions come true, for all these hundreds of forever free wild mustangs, for all of us horse and land lovers to realize this along side of Dayton's dreams. He found a way for us all to come there, or see the photos and to help the horses. He had such a way with words, and his books and articles have opened the doors for us to feel like we have been living his visions for the present and futures of these magnificent animals. I"m sure we will all miss him very much, and are grateful that he has provided a way for it to all continue. But we can be certain that God has provided him with a huge range, free horses, and Happy Trails in heaven for such a wonderful person ! Love you, Dayton.

My deepest sympathy to Dayton's family, Susan, and the rest of the Sanctuary staff. I only met him twice while visiting the Sanctuary but his love of the wild horses and the land came through loud and clear. He leaves a legacy that will never be forgotten as the wild horses thrive in the Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary that he created.

Truly, a life well lived...I am inspired and touched by the extraordinary level of Mr. Hyde's wonderful adventurous & exciting life accompanied by his caring, doing and giving. What a grand legacy he has given to us of America's great heritage, our wild horses, in which he dedicated his life and resources to protect in his later years. Thank you Mr. Hyde as you continue to ride the trails and rodeos in heaven and thank you to Susan, your family, friends, volunteers and staff at your beautiful Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary as you and the horses have all touched my life. You are in my prayers and my heart.

I was one of the first people Dayton meet when he moved to Hot Springs, used to come for Holiday meals, we remained good friends and was able to go see him and visit before we headed south for the winter. Dayton would always tell people "This is my oldest friend" and I would put my hand on my hip and say "Dayton, I'm not that old" and we would laugh. Sure going to miss you my Friend Love from Patty and Ted
