Beverly Tanner Obituary

Beverly Dean Parkes Tanner was born Aug. 6, 1921, in Salt Lake City, Utah. She passed away Sunday, Aug. 19, 2012, near Logan, Utah. She was the second of four children born to Henry and Ivy Parkes.
Her life of over 91 years spanned "the worst of times and the best of times" - times of depression, times of prosperity, times of war, times of peace, and most of all, times of freedom. She had the freedom to choose her goals, her dreams and her passions, shaped by her circumstances.
She grew up in Los Angeles, Calif., and attended Bakersfield Junior College in Bakersfield, Calif. While there she met her future husband, Rex Tanner.
Before they finished school he received his orders to active duty with the Army Air Corps near Dallas, Texas. While he was preparing for overseas duty, they were married Sept. 13, 1942, and later sealed in the Mesa LDS Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
That union of over 60 years filled her first passion - to have a large family of 14 children whose names all begin with "M": Marion, Mike, Max, Marilyn, Marc, Morris, Milo, Melanie, Mel, Mace, Mont, Minta, Merle and Mathew.
After short residences in Dallas, Texas; Glendale, Calif.; Sparks, Nev.; and Carey, Idaho, they settled in Boise, Idaho, where they lived for the next 54 years. For the last nine years she lived with her daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and Sam Jones, in Young Ward, Utah.
Her next passion grew out of the need to feed a big family - baking bread! She became a self-taught cook and baker using fresh whole milk and whole-grain wheat. She sought out machines that helped in the wheat-grinding and bread-making processes. She prepared and served great loaves of bread, rolls of every kind and peanut brittle!
Her interests and talents soon led to her next passion as a public speaker and teacher. She conducted product demonstrations and taught cooking classes. She was an early-morning Seminary teacher for 17 years, a substitute school teacher for 24 years, a motivational speaker, an entertainer and a missionary! She was well known for her enthusiasm and her ability to recite poetry!
When she reached the retirement age of 65 in 1986, she did not retire! From 65 to 84 she was a substitute school teacher and from 68 to 82 she made many guest appearances on national talk shows such as "Late Night with David Letterman," the "Wayne Brady Show" and the "Donny and Marie Show." From 70 to 71 she served with her husband as a missionary in the Germany Frankfurt Temple Mission. At 77 she published her book, "Making and Baking Memories With Bev Tanner." She was also recognized as the Gem of Idaho for her "vigor and vitality" at 77.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Willard Parkes of Fresno, Calif.; husband, Rex Tanner of Boise, Idaho; and four sons, Mel, Merle, Marc and Mace. She is survived by three daughters, Marilyn Jones (Sam) of Young Ward, Utah, Melanie Hutchinson (Keith) of Twin Falls, Idaho, and Minta Halling (Brian) of Twin Falls, Idaho; daughter-in-law, Diane Tanner of Boise, Idaho; and seven sons, Marion (Christie) of Washougal, Wash., Mike (Carleen) of Boise, Idaho, Max of Henderson, Nev., Morris (Christi) of Midway, Utah, Milo of Reno, Nev., Mont (Michelle) of Henderson, Nev., and Mathew (Jenny) of Monticello, Utah. She leaves a posterity of 14 children, 58 grandchildren and 113 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters, Kathryn Bradford of Orem, Utah, and Mary Lou Whipple of Laie, Hawaii.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, at the Spring Creek Ward in Mt. Sterling (from Highway 89-91 go to 4800 W. 1450 South). A viewing will be held at 10 a.m. prior to services. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 27, in the Meridian, Idaho, Cemetery, 895 E. Franklin Road.

Our heartfelt condolences to the family of a wonderful, cheerful, selfless woman whom we are indebted to for the many classes I attended in bread making. I looked forward to her wonderful stories of her loving family, fourteen children with names all starting with the letter "M" and the funny tales only a Loving Mom could tell. Dear Beverly will be missed by so many. Sorry I didn't find this earlier so we could be at the Meridian Cemetery for her services. Sending prayers of comfort to all the family and close friends of dear Beverly Tanner.

Sister Tanner will be missed by many. She was a primary teacher for my husband Tim Lough and we both loved seeing her and enjoyed her spark and her beautiful spirit. To her family we send our thoughts and prayers and want them to know that she was a person who inspired everyone she met. We saw her on the Letterman show and were delighted and proud to know her. God Bless you all.

Sister Tanner was my first Seminary teacher and had such love and enthusiasm for the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I loved her and felt her love for me and all our class. Many years later I was blessed to serve with her on occasion in the Boise Temple. Her love & enthusiam still shone! Marilyn was an example to me in high school. I often sought her out just for a kind word and smile. Thank you Marilyn. Mark was such a fun person and friend to me also. Diane, you will always be a dear friend I think of with fond memories. My love to all Bev's beautiful family. Peace until you meet again! Candy Cattell Barrows

Sister Tanner was my first Seminary teacher and made such an impression on my mind to love the Gospel. Years later I would see her in the Tepmle in Boise and she still remembered me. Marilyn, you were always so sweet and kind to me at Borah, even though I was a younger classman. There were days I sought you out just for a kindly word and smile. Thank you! Diane, you and Mark will always be dear in my memories. My condolences to all of the family.

I'll never forget Mrs. Tanner! She was my favorite substitute teacher! As a young teenager, I lived not far from her home on Tanner Lane. I visited her regularly and loved listening to her life stories and eating fresh bread. Thank you Mrs. Tanner for the great memories!

When we first moved to Boise we were in the same ward as Mark and Diane and learned about Bev's skill at bread making. I bought my first (and only so far) bread mixer recommended by Bev.
Bev has been an inspiration to me and I treasure the opportunity to have met her.
Sweet condolences to her family and know that she will be remembered fondly.

My Beloved Aunt Bev- what a remarkable treasure you are. You left this world a far better place than you found it. Your influence will be felt not just for generations but for eternity. Some of my best and earliest memories are spending days at your home in Boise. I considered your son, Mark, one of my best friends and finest examples.
May God Bless the beautiful Tanner Family and may God welcome you home to the wonderful reception you deserve!

She was a great inspiration to those who were ever around her. She was a sub in some of my seminary classes or sometimes she would come and speak, it would always make my day! What a great lady, she served her mission on Earth well and I am sure she will be keeping heaven busy!

I was sad to hear of Bev's passing. I remember her demonstrating how to make bread at a Relief Society meeting. She had such energy! Recently I again remembered this sweet time when I used a recipe from her bread cook book which I bought from that special evening. My condolences go out to her family. She will be missed.

It is impossible to know how many lives have been blessed by Bev. When one considers not only her large family, but hundreds of seminary students and millions who loved her on TV, it is clear that her legacy will never die. Few people are fortunate enough to make as much a difference in the world as did Bev. I imagine they have seminary classes in the spirit world. If so, the kids there are in for a treat. The oldest among us have never seen anyone like her, and the youngest ones, however long they live, will never see another.

I was fortunate to have been one of Sister Tanner's early morning seminary students, well over forty years ago. She taught with conviction and enthusiasm that you don't see often. Her influence was positive and enduring. To each member of the extended Tanner family, I send my love and heart felt condolences at the passing of your wonderful mother.

Bev was a great lady. She spoke at our stake Relief Society meeting a few years ago.She made each woman feel better about herself and place in her family and community. Loved her spots on Letterman. She will be missed.
We extend our sincere sympathy to her dear family at this special time.

I never had the pleasure of meeting Sister Tanner in person, but heard glowing reports about her from my siblings, who had her as a teacher in various settings. And, my father Harold Hulme MD derived great satisfaction from having delivered at least SOME of her children, and possibly even grandchildren.

I always made a point to tune in Letterman when Sister Tanner was a guest.

"Have ye spiritually been born of God? Have ye received his image in your countenances? Have ye experienced this mighty change in your hearts?" It was very evident that Sister Tanner could answer those questions in the affirmative.

May her loved ones find comfort and solace... she's got a good spot reserved for her in the Kingdom!

I became acquainted with Beverly when I married Val Hopkins 58 years ago. What a great lady she was and truly loved her family and the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
