Bernice "Bennie" Coe
1921-2015
Bernice "Bennie" Coe passed away on May 24, 2015, at the age of 94. She was born in DeQueen, Arkansas, to the late Roy and Alliene Choate.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Arvard, her sister, Oma Swann, and her husband's parents, Rux and Kate Coe.
She is survived by her children, Michelle and husband, Jimmy Goodson, Harvey Coe, and Kipling Coe. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Kristen Goodson Clark (Todd), Meredith Goodson Hairell (Walt Ellis), Courtney Coe Wilkinson (Grey), Cara Coe Latham (Kirk), Cassi Coe, Jason Coe (Angie), and Lucas Coe. She has 12 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Roy Choate, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Bennie graduated from Tomball High School, attended Howard Payne University, and later graduated from Sam Houston State University. She and Arvard were married in 1941 and lived most of their married life on property in Montgomery County that his family had ranched from early Texas land grant days. She taught English at Tomball High School for several years and was an active partner with Arvard in his business endeavors. They enjoyed traveling with their Silver Streak group and other friends through the years. She was an active member of First Baptist Church for most of her life, teaching Sunday School, participating in mission groups, and serving on various committees. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed feeding the wildlife around her home. She enjoyed sewing, crafting, playing games, and cooking her famous chocolate pies for her friends and family.
Visitation will be held at Klein Funeral Home in Tomball on Wednesday, May 27, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Funeral service will be held at Klein Funeral Home in Tomball on Thursday, May 28, at 2:00 p.m. Private graveside service will follow.
Her grandsons Jason Coe, Todd Clark, Walt Ellis Hairell, Grey Wilkinson, and Kirk Latham will serve as pall bearers along with great-grandson Kelly Hairell. Honorary pall bearers will be nephews Bobby Sansom and David de los Santos, cousin Wheeler Coe, and long-time friends and neighbors, Fortino Camacho and Jerry Free. The service will be conducted by Rev. Gary Snyder, pastor of Bethel Baptist Church in Pinehurst, Texas.
The family would like to express its appreciation to her kind and compassionate caregivers at Clare Bridge Memory Care in Victoria, the friends who took her to church, her Joker group, her traveling group, and all others who were supportive throughout her later years.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to Hospice of South Texas, 605 East Locust Avenue, Victoria, TX 77901, or charity of your choice.
