Freda Bass Obituary

Freda Wilkerson Bass
1949-2017
Freda Wilkerson Bass died on the morning of Wednesday, the 27th of December 2017, in Houston.
Freda was born on the 25th of July 1949, in Terre Haute, Indiana, to Janet Sessoms Wilkerson, a Ph.D. candidate in early childhood development, and Edward Lee Wilkerson, a surgeon and community development venture capitalist.
Dr. Wilkerson's career took their family to Germany in 1953 and then to Shaker Heights, Ohio, where the family's arrival desegregated their new neighborhood.
The challenges of the time during which she was a student — particularly desegregation and the civil rights movement — shaped her. Decades later she still remembered pivotal moments growing up such as when she trained her entire high school cheerleading team how to do backflips and cartwheels, but then was not chosen for the team because the school didn't have Black cheerleaders. Experiences like this fueled her competitive drive.
Even as a child, Freda always enjoyed numbers. She attended Major Work, a Cleveland public school program for gifted children. Her career in finance began during high school when she worked summer jobs as a bank teller, over time developing a preternatural intuitive math ability.
She met her future husband, Andrew "Tony" Bass, at Farm and Wilderness summer camp when they were both 15.
Freda majored in economics at Stanford University and transferred to Cornell University where she received her BA in 1971. She was one of only a few African-American women students in her class at University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business, graduating with an MBA in 1973.
On the recommendation of a professor at Wharton who recognized her financial acumen, Freda started work at Exxon Corporation in June of 1973. She thrived in finance and strategic planning for 39 years at Exxon, excelling in a variety of business segments including domestic and foreign oil and gas operations, frontier area oil exploration, chemicals, coal and minerals, as well as at corporate headquarters.
Freda did things her way, in part perhaps because she was often the first. Her friends and former colleagues describe her as "a trailblazer," "kind and giving," "quick-witted," "intelligent," a "brilliant mind," "a force of nature," "wise," "no-nonsense or BS," and "an extraordinary woman who lit a path for many." Her siblings, in awe of her natural leadership abilities, have lovingly referred to her as "Il Duce" since childhood.
She was admired for her accomplishments in one of the most competitive and high-performing corporate groups in the country. She was a great leader, a role model for women in business and an impactful mentor and coach to many who sought her guidance.
Her strength of intellect, character, integrity and grace were matched with a sense of humor and an enjoyable laugh. She was willfully optimistic.
She had a way of making people feel good about themselves which stemmed from genuine humility and humanity. She believed that what people are capable of is influenced by what you expect of them.
In her work she was an active proponent of diverse teams. In working with people across the globe, she found that when people from different backgrounds, cultures, or genders work together to create solutions, outcomes are often better and more efficient.
An avid world traveler for both work and leisure, she had a propensity for showing up for flights a nanosecond before the doors of the plane closed. Her career brought her to Australia, where she developed an interest in Aboriginal art and a love of quiet beaches.
Freda loved applying her finance skills to public service work. She took tremendous joy in her work on the boards of Texas Children's Hospital, St. John's School, the Houston Zoo, ExxonMobil Foundation, the Episcopal Health Foundation, and the Farm and Wilderness Foundation. She was also a member of the Financial Executives Institute and co-founder of the Houston Business Forum.
Freda was a planner, a maker of lists, and an assigner of tasks. She was also an excellent cook who enjoyed preparing foods with specially procured ingredients, including Malaysian cuisine. An avid equestrian, she encouraged her daughters to ride and compete in horse shows.
She delighted in her multifaceted life, sharing joy with friends and family. Following the death of her mother, Janet, Freda became the family matriarch and led her family with love and care. In her final years she concluded, "I've had a wonderful life."
Freda is survived by her two daughters, Drew and Callie Bass, her siblings, Joyce, Edward, and Elizabeth Wilkerson, sister-in-law Gill Bass, nephew Jackson Young, brother-in-law Tetsuki Ijichi, and extended Kirkland family. Her husband, Tony, died in 2014.
A celebration of her life was held yesterday afternoon at Geo. H. Lewis & Sons.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in her honor can be made to Texas Children's Hospital in Houston or the Smithsonian Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C.

Ms. Wilkerson-Bass was clearly a talented hard worker who reaped the rewards of her diligence while inspiring others along the way. "There is nothing better for a man than to eat and drink and find enjoyment in his hard work. This too, I have realized, is from the hand of the true God" - Ecclesiastes 2:24

May you find comfort in cherished memories.

Freda I can still see you smiling on us. I was a colleague of hers and had the pleasure of working with her at Exxon solving many challenging problems. Freda alway had a welcoming smile even in the most trying circumstances. She was smart, professional, witty and had a way of bringing everyone together to work the task at hand. She accomplished much in her lifetime and made a difference in the lives of other people in and outside of the Company. You will be missed Freda. My condolences to her family and I wish you all the strength and support during this difficult time.

One of the last things I did before I retired in 2009 was to invite Freda to lead a lunchtime discussion with the younger employees in our department about how to be a successful professional. I did so because I admired her professionalism and integrity. She graciously accepted in spite of her very busy schedule. It was something she did not "have to do" but because she was always willing to help others, she did so. Whether it was at work, at home or in the community, she made others better people because of the exemplary life she led. It was a privilege to get to know her and I send best wishes for peace and comfort to all who mourn her loss.

One of the highlights of moving to Houston was enjoying Freda, Tony, Potato and visits of their wonderful family (amazing daughters!) as neighbors right across the street. Meeting her sister and sister's husband in Santa Fe and realizing we had a connection there gave us an additional bond. I asked her if she regretted retiring later than sooner and she replied: the people she worked with, the work she did and travel were highlights of her life. Freda is truly a woman who believed in the community and served on boards tirelessly between medical treatments. She also pushed the medical profession to work with her and expand their knowledge. Her financial acumen is admirable. During the 6 years I knew Freda, she lived life with a dedication to testing norms and mentored my career growth, even though I was not with Exxon. I will truly miss Freda and am thankful for the many hours she graced me with as a neighbor and friend.

Freda and I met the first day of college in September of 1967, when we were assigned to each other as roommates. I still remember how impeccably dressed she was in her brown tweed suit! The first two things I learned about her were that she loved Motown and that she told amazing stories; some of the stories--particularly about the family St Bernard--still bring a smile. The other thing I quickly learned about her is that she always had a game plan, even at a stage of life where most of us were just lurching around. After Freda transferred to Cornell in her junior year we lost contact but I knew we would somewhere meet again. As it turned out we both ended up working in Exxon's international headquarters (then in NYC) in the late 70's. We discovered this when we ran into each other in the foyer of the Rockefeller Center building. In the aftermath I tracked Freda's soaring career with interest and zero surprise. And every few years, before our college reunions, I would contact her to ask if she would be joining us. Eleven years ago she promised that she would make the 50th. That was not to happen--she died 3.5 years shy of that occasion--but she will greatly missed and warmly remembered by all of us who knew her.

Heartfelt condolences to the Wilkerson Bass family, and much sadness as the City of Houston has lost a very bright light. Freda's ferocious intellect, warmth, humor, and kindness will all be sorely missed. She was a gracious leader who touched all she met, and her smile could open any door. We were all so very fortunate know her, and my thoughts and prayers are with her family whom she loved so much.

I had the pleasure of working closely with Freda for many years. She was the consummate professional with a brilliant finance mind. Her accomplishments in finance are well known throughout the ExxonMobil world. She also was very active with the Houston Zoo and a great asset to that organization. And perhaps her greatest gift was her mentoring skills of the many recruits into the Treasurers organization. She will be missed.

Freda and I met in the summer of 1973 when we both arrived at the same time for our first day of work at Exxon's New York headquarters. A lasting friendship developed and we continued to share ideas and strategies all the way to retirement. Freda was a bright, no-nonsense executive who would not back down when she believed in something and had a magnetic personality that allowed her to push forward without offending people. She was a great asset to the Treasurer's leadership team. We will all miss her. Sincerest condolences to her family.

Although I worked down the hall from Freda for a number of years, I didn't get to know her until after her retirement. It was then that we discovered we were neighbors.
