Rebecca Hutzelman Obituary

Our beautiful and beloved REBECCA (BECKY, MOPSY) YOUNG HUTZELMAN passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on July 5th after a tenacious short struggle with advanced latent breast cancer. She was born on February 23, 1943 in Zanesville, OH to James Carlos Young and Emma Elizabeth Mears. She spent her formative years in Crooksville and Cuyahoga Falls, OH where she played violin and graduated from Cuyahoga Falls H.S. as member of the Senior Prom Queen's Court. She went on to graduate with a BA in Elementary Education in 1965 from Ohio Wesleyan University where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority and was honored as Military Ball Queen at Kenyon College in 1962. She married David Hutzelman, 1Lt, USAF later that year and lived in Fort Walton Beach, FL before moving to Houston in 1966. She taught at Valley Oaks Elementary, later substituted in the SBISD system, and was past-president of the Bunker Hill PTA. She was an avid reader and member of Les Belles Lettres Book Club for over 30 years. She was an accomplished amateur photographer, an ardent bridge player and regular participant in the Pi Phi Marathon bridge competition and other informal bridge groups. She belonged to the Money Mavens Investment Club and the Houston Assembly of Delphian Chapters where she held numerous offices. She was committed to physical fitness, loved to travel and enjoyed the beach and birding in Galveston. But her most cherished pastime was relishing the company of her three grandchildren who were the joy of her life. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, passionate grandmother and a joyful optimistic friend who will be sorely missed by many. She is survived by David, her husband of 43 years, her daughter and son-in-law Laura Beth and Josh Kaufmann of Austin, son and daughter-in-law Eric and Kristin Hutzelman of Houston, grandchildren Audrey and Max Kaufmann and Lauren Hutzelman and sister in law Elaine Hutzelman of Houston and relatives in OH, IL and TN. A memorial service for Rebecca will be held at Chapelwood United Methodist Church 11140 Greenbay, Houston TX 77024 on Friday July 11th at 2:00PM with a private family burial service to follow at Memorial Oaks Cemetery. Remembrances may be sent to Friends of Galveston Island State Park, PO Box 5428, Galveston, TX 77554; The Clay Valley Foundation, 98 South Buckeye, Crooksville. OH 43731; or the Spring Branch Education Foundation, 955 Campbell Road, Houston TX 77024; or. The family would like to express their gratitude for all your support during this difficult time.

I want to extend my most heartfelt condolences to the Young and Hutzelman families for their loss. I know Rebecca will be missed. Although I am but a distant friend, I have been moved by how much affection has been poured out in this guestbook. It seems Rebecca lived a life full of love and accomplishments.

My prayers are with all of her family and friends.

David, I have just learned of the loss of Becky. I am deeply saddened. I think of all those years as neighbors that we enjoyed watching our children grow up together. There are so many joyous memories of those years and at the same time the sadness that the two very special people that played such a vital part of these memories are no longer with us. My thoughts are with you , my friend.
