Michael Knust Obituary

MICHAEL STEPHEN KNUST passed away on September 15, 2003 in his home at Spring Branch, Texas at the age of 54. He was preceded in death by his beloved father, Bernhard Knust and godchild, Michele. He is survived by his wife, Tinker, his daughter, Kristen Knust, beloved friend, Melissa Knust, his mother, Florine, brothers, Gary and Mark, sisters, Regina Henry, Carolyn Doga and Gail Buske and David Bell, and a host of niece, nephews and cousins. Michael was THE lead guitar player for Fever Tree, a Houston based rock group of the 60's and 70's. He continued on with his musical career after the group broke up and played with many excellent musicians throughout his life. He will be sorely missed. The family will receive friends Thursday, September 18th from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. with a Rosary being recited at 7:00 P.M. in the Chapel of Forest Park Westheimer Funeral Home 12800 Westheimer where Funeral services will be held Friday, September 19th at 10:00 A.M. with interment to follow in the Cemetery. In lieu of 0flowers donations can be made the Star of Hope, 6897 Ardmore, Houston, TX. 77054, (713) 748-0700.

I met Michael in the late 90s on a flight from Dallas to Denver. He told me about his accident and that he couldnt play any more. I told him about my singer songwriter/ guitar playing buddy Jerry Tegarden who also lost feeling in his left hand but recovered. I hooked the two together and I know they talked by phone a couple times. Jerry had recovered feeling in his hand and was playing again. Thats why Michael wanted to talk with him.

Im wondering if any of his family have any memories of this. Please contact me if you have stories.

So very sad to learn of Michael's passing. I was lucky enough to have Michael as a guitar teacher at Dale Mullins studio. My experiences with Michael were always magical. I will always remember them when I play. Their spirits sing on in the music they inspired.

Michael,

I discovered your group in the 60's when you came out with "Hey Mister" and "Steve Lenore" (B-side). It made me an instant fan. I still have the 45-rpm version!

Over the next few years, I got to see you at Love Street and other Houston clubs. I was the lead singer of The Elastic Prism at the time and had the honor of opening for Fever Tree at the Catacombs Club and St. Bernard Hall back in the late 60's. I still remember the GREAT music and light shows you guys put on!!

You guys were really gear and were a huge influence on my music and interpretation.

You will be missed greatly. My prayers are with your family and close friends.

OohWoahooo... Got to have all your loving... ohhh, night and day... yes, I do.

I've been to literally thousands of concerts. One of my all time favorites was seeing Fever Tree (The Tree) open for Spirit in the Houston Music Hall, with a screaming Dennis Keller sans shirt, Rob Landes moving from organ to harpsichord to flute, and Michael with so much power that he could hang his toes off of the front of the stage and get MASSIVE feedback from his amps near the back of the stage.

Years later, I hung with him at a festival in the Astro Hall and backstage at Rockefeller's. He complained that people wanted him to continue doing that Fever Tree-era "feedback sound", while he wanted to play "cleaner".
