He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Chris Shoemaker.Dr. Shoemaker is survived by his beloved wife of 20 years, Deborah Duncan Shoemaker, who was his joy and by his side every day in his practice. Wonderful daughters Aubrey Merton and husband Kaleb, Ashley Young and husband Justin, Elizabeth Sellers and husband Brooks, and Keli Duncan Palmer. Grandchildren Carter & Juliet Young, Olivia Palmer, Andrew & Samuel Sellers, Lauren Schell , Merilyn Guzman & Kate Cones. Sisters Jill & Jodie Shoemaker of Houston. His extended family includes Sarah R. Duncan, H. Mills Duncan III, Kent M. Duncan, Rodney D. Duncan, William R. Duncan, Dr. R. Lindsey Duncan, and Thomas C. Duncan.Dr. Shoemaker was an excellent athlete, representing the Dad's Club of Houston swim team in the 1960's and early '70's. After graduation from Strake Jesuit, Dr. Shoemaker was graduated with honors from The University of Texas at Austin. He received his Doctor of Medicine in 1976 from The University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio. His Internship/Residency was at University of Texas Medical Branch Houston.Dr. Shoemaker was Medical Director, Harris County Sheriff's Department 1979-1982. He was consultant to The American Medical Association to inspect and certify Prison Medical Departments for the State of Texas. He entered Private Medical Practice 1980 through present. Dr. Shoemaker was a Member of The American Academy of Family Physicians and The Harris County Medical Society.Dr. Shoemaker, affectionately known as Gerry to his family and close friends, was an avid craftsman and founding member of the Lone Star Chapter of the Society of American Period Furniture Makers, a national organization addressing the specific interests and needs of cabinetmakers who specialize in the furniture of America's past. He enjoyed performing demonstrations of 18th Century woodworking techniques at Bayou Bend and other venues around Houston. Other interests were The Rolls Royce Society and The Houston Maritime Museum.Gerry was a man of extraordinary talent. He walked gently and humbly through life, forgetful of self. Gerry practiced the lost art of communication with each patient. A medical associate described him as "the inspiration for every doctor to be". He devoted most of his life to serving others. While we mourn the loss of this great man of heart, we should not lose sight of the ideals Gerry found so important... besides the love for his family, everyone was his friend and those who spent time with him can attest to his wit, laughter, and good humor. This Easter, we say farewell to our dearest Gerry; devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and doctor, and send him to live in the House of the Lord. The Shoemaker Family wishes to thank Mario and Irene Lopez and their childern for their love and support. Dr. Shoemaker was the medical director at several nursing homes where I was the rehab director or staff therapist at. He was truly a good guy and physician and always took the time to listen to therapists and patients.. He was a credit to his profession and will truly be missed.

It is with great saddness that I write this heartfelt message for the dear family of Dr. James G. Shoemaker. Dr. Shoemaker took wonderful care of my Mother, Mrs. Marjorie Page Banning for a number of years when Mom was in a Nursing Home. He was dear, gentle, with warmth, we are forever grateful for his genuine attention given our Mother. May God be with you and give you peace during this very tragic time. Dr. Shoemaker touched not only our hearts, yet I know he touched thousands...what a great gift. Thank you Dr. Shoemaker from the bottom of our hearts. Henny and Frank Banning

We are so blessed to have known such a caring and devoted man. The way he and his family treated us was so much more than any patient could have asked of a doctor and staff. He had a way about him that put us at ease no matter what problems we threw at him. Our thoughts and prayers go out to him and his wonderful family. The Shoemaker's will always hold a special place in our hearts.

The services were so beautiful today, and I didn't have the chance to tell you, but when I met Gerry 26 years ago, (Diane sent me to him) he was as sweet a Dr. then and caring as he was 3 weeks ago when Ernie and I last saw him. He could explain everything to you about your illness and slip in all the funny stories and family history, he could keep you so interested and amazed, how bright this man was. He was not just my Doc, he was my counselor, as well as Debi, Elizabeth and Keli too! I love you all, He was also my FRIEND, and I grew to love your entire family, they became family to me...and don't know what I'd done if I hadn't been able to pick up that phone and call. Gerry was a "One of a Kind" Doc and I will never be able to replace him, he genuinely cared about his patients, and you left feeling better just to have been in his presence and having him make you laugh. A story he told Ernie and I a few weeks ago was so funny & cute, that the evening we came home and went to bed, I heard Ernie chuckling and I said "Whats so funmy", he said "Oh what Doc was telling us today at his office", that is so funny! He just had that way about him, you always felt special. And Debi would have to send Elizabeth or Keli in to get him out of the room, because he had been with us an hour to a hour and a half..we loved it though..and hope we didn't make anyone mad for the wait... And Debi, Elizabeth and Keli, you better pick up that phone anytime and talk to me, you have been there for me through my losses and I want to be here for you all. I love you all so much and will miss my Doc...so much! I hope knowing he is with God will give you some comfort, but it will be a time of healing....and I will be here, just a phone call away. May God bless the Shoemaker family with peace during this difficult time of greif and disbeleif. For those of us who knew him professionally, we also knew him personally. He was the doctor that always had a kind word and a story to tell - you felt an immediate kinship with him and knew that he really listened and cared about each person he came across.
I was shocked to hear of Doctor Shoemaker's sudden departure - Heaven must have needed a good doctor and a great man 'stat'. Rest in Peace Doc.

Our prayers and best wishes go out the Dr. Shoemaker's family. Houston has lost a great advocate for the geriatric community. The compassion and attention that he provided to his patients will be remembered always.

I was introduced to Dr. Shoemaker within the last few years. What a shame I only knew him for a brief period of time. He was an amazing man, doctor, human and great listener. He always took the time to listen to me complain about my aches or pains or job or whatever! He and I always talked about my life as a CPA. He loved talking taxes and business. I am truly better off to have known this awesome man. I am still in disbelief, but rest knowing that he will always be a shining star above. The last conversation we had was all about my Ipod. That was just how cool he was! He was asking me all about the apps on it and telling me about the newest ones he downloaded on his Ipod. What an incredible doc---I miss him and his family A TON already!

I've been a patient of Doc's for over 15 years and he was the best. I could go there not feeling well and he would say "gonna fix you up and you're gonna feel better" and I always did, thanks to Doc. Lord knows I don't know what I'm gonna do without him. Doc will truly be missed and I feel so blessed to have known him as well as Debbie, Elizabeth and Keli. God Bless You All!!!!

Shoemaker family,
A physician who was kind, caring, compassionate, and one who believed in his Hippocratic Oath. He was born to be "Doc" and the heavens are shining brighter with the new star that God has called home. He will be sorely missed and I was blessed to be cared for, along with my kids Godfather Bob. "Doc" transcended what he knew from medical school and applied humor with excellent listening skills to his brand of medicine. The earth has lost a great physician and God has acquired a good and faithful man!!! Hugs, Carolyn Drake

You have my deepest sympathy. I was a high school classmate of Gerry's. Although I have not seen him since 1968, I greeted this news with great sadness. Dear Debbie, Ashley, Elizabeth and Kelly

I can't even begin to tell how sad I am for you! I know your hearts are suffering and I don't have any words big enough to help comfort you with the loss of Doc. I am so incredibly happy that I came to see him the day before God called him home..What a blessing I feel to have had the chance to hear his voice, listen to his stories and hear him say " I'll be right back". :) What a kind soul, Doc was so very much more that a doctor he was the caretaker of my whole family and most importantly he cared so lovingly for my husband in his last days. For this I will always be so incredibly grateful. I know that Doc and Jim are together telling stories and watching over us.
Thank you for sharing him with us!! May God comfort and guide you as you grieve the loss of your husband and father.

My Love to you all,

I have known Dr. Shoemaker for about 7 years. I first met him at Kateland Square in Richmond, Tx now known as Cambridge Healthcare Center. He was also the doctor of over 90% of our residents at Rosenberg Health and Rehab in Rosenberg, Tx. I just want to say I will truly miss him. He is one of kind. So warm, friendly and delightful. He was one in a million. I know God called him home but it just hurts. It was so sudden and shocking ot learn of his death. You will truly be missed. We all love you. May God Bless your family.

I did not know this wonderful man; however, his father Roger delivered my brother and sister (twins) in 1959 and we used him as our wonderful doctor until 1979. He and his wife Edith became friends of our family. I remember my parents calling him in the middle of the night and he would come if need be. We loved him and it sounds like Gerry followed in his dad's footsteps. We are saddened by this loss of a great man.

I was a patient of "Doc" Shoemaker for twenty years and he became a friend as well as my physician. He had an innate ability to diagnose illnesses very quickly and was always so compassionate in consultations. I shall miss his quick smile, our long conversations and the security of knowing he was MY doctor and friend.
