Robert Foye Obituary

Robert Lawrence Foye
1998-2018
It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our son, Robert Lawrence Foye on January 13th, 2018. He was 19 years old. Robert was the oldest of four children, with a brother and two sisters, and spent most of his life outside the US. We moved to Hong Kong when he was two months old. When Robert was three, we moved to London, where he later attended a neighborhood school (in his tie and cap) and learned to ride a bike in Hyde Park. After London, we spent six years in Jakarta, Indonesia, where Robert had Nerf gun battles with his friends, developed a love for nasi goreng and surfed in Bali with his parents and siblings. We later moved again, to Shanghai, China. After building a successful career in football during middle school, he was the star of his high school basketball team and won the coaches' award in his senior year. He was very happy and well liked. We know that he had deep friendships with people all over the world, from at least 46 countries by our calculations.
Robert graduated from Shanghai Community International School with an IB Diploma before moving to Texas to attend Trinity University in San Antonio. Robert really enjoyed Trinity and was very happy with the learning environment, the campus and all the support and connections with the faculty and staff.
Robert took his role as the oldest sibling seriously, either to guide or advise, or to gleefully act as a provocateur. He was tall and lean with nut-brown wavy hair and hazel eyes like his father's. He had keen powers of observation and a witty, usually contrarian comment to add to any discussion. His interests were wide-ranging: Imperial Japan, old-school rap music, stock picking, pro-basketball, and much more. He spoke and wrote Mandarin Chinese, and binge-read Wikipedia entries, following rabbit trails of information that caught his interest.
After his high school basketball career in Shanghai, he maintained his competitive mentality in grueling pickup games with his father, friends and members of the Trinity Community. He had great defensive skills, could drive to the basket and had a good three-point shot.
Last summer, Robert successfully completed a six-week internship in Shanghai and New York with Lagardere, a global French sports and media company, and would have continued in another internship with the company this next summer. Robert loved New York. He was comfortable in every part of the city, and his favorite pastime was exploring new neighborhoods.
Most recently, Robert had a wonderful winter break touring Japan with his family, during which he shared a room with his brother and one of his sisters and ate sushi by the platter. While visiting the cities of Fukuoka, Kyoto and Tokyo, Robert shared his knowledge of Japan's history and culture.
Robert's sartorial style consisted of a classic watch (a graduation gift from his parents), jeans, visually arresting sport shoes (his most recent pair was a bright camouflage) and a brown or black leather jacket (weather permitting).
Robert had a great, easy laugh and a big smile. He was a loyal friend. Even when he was direct or distracted, he always had a good heart and wanted to do the right thing. Robert was very high energy and struggled with some dependencies, but had rededicated himself to his studies and was excited about every one of his classes for the spring term.
His family and friends are heartbroken that he will not have a chance to mature into his potential and live a long, fulfilling life. We are deprived of his love as a son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin and friend. Everyone will miss him dearly.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm, Friday, January 19, 2018 and Funeral Mass will be at 12:00 noon, Saturday, January 20, 2018 both at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 6800 Buffalo Speedway, Houston, TX 77025. Interment will follow immediately after the mass at Glenwood Cemetery.
Robert is survived by his parents, Robert and Kristianna, his brother, William, and his sisters, Meredith and Annabel, plus extended family that includes four grandparents, four aunts, five uncles, and 14 cousins.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Robert's memory to the Robert Lawrence Foye Scholarship Foundation. Donations may be made online at https://www.paypal.me/RobertLawrenceFoye or mailed to RBC, 1001 Fannin St, Suite 1200, Houston, TX 77002. I donated to the college scholarship set up in honor of Robert and sent the below message... I wanted to post it here too, because it summarizes my thoughts about our dear Robert.

His scholarship fund is www.paypal.me/RobertLawrenceFoye

Robert was such an easy going and good natured guy. He was always fun to be around with such a great attitude.

He interned for my company and during that time I was able to have lots of conversations with him about sales, business and customer service. Robert went out into the field with me several times and I got to teach him how to talk to customers. But really - he didn't need too much help, because he was a natural.

I have an older brother and sister, Mike and Gena, that I love very much - but I never had a younger brother. I thought of Robert like the younger brother I never had. If I ever had a younger brother, I would have wanted him to be just like Robert.

I miss talking with him. He will be missed, but NEVER forgotten.

We miss you Robert!

With much love,
Gary

Dear Robert,

I remember the day you were born. I remember that my mom - your Grammy - called me from Houston to tell me the joyous news. He's here! she exclaimed, with excitement that was palpable all the way to my office phone in Chicago. She told me all about your birth, and at the end of our call, I said, By they way, Mom, happy birthday. She had forgotten that, with the arrival of her first grandchild, she had a new person with whom to share future birthday celebrations.

I remember walking you to preschool. Before I had children of my own, I visited you in twice Hong Kong and again in London, where I got to hold your little hand and walk you to preschool. I remember that you excitedly showed off how you could count to 100. You had American parents and the most charming British accent and I loved hearing what you had to say. You were so smart, so interesting, even as a toddler. I loved you then, and I love you now.

I remember you as a boy, visiting us in Houston. You were the leader of the cousins, always causing a ruckus. You drove me crazy, running all around, being a kid. In retrospect, I wish I had yelled at you less and hugged you more. You were a great host when we visited you in Jakarta and then in Shanghai. You led your cousins to countless adventures. My kids have always had the privilege of having you as their eldest cousin. They've always looked up to you. Since you left us, they've connected with you in prayer. I hope you can hear them, and I hope you know how profoundly you are missed.

I remember you as a young man. I remember being astonished that I had to tilt my face upward to hug you in recent years. Your smile was infectious and your laugh sounded a lot like your dad's. You took the time to come watch your cousins - my twins - play basketball. You cheered them on, you charmed the moms in the bleachers, and you made a memory that we will all cherish.

When I remember you, it is all those versions of you that come to mind. Those 19 years came and went far too quickly. I'm grateful for every one of them. I can't believe you're gone, and I will always, always remember you.

Love,
Aunt Heather

No words can truly capture our shared pain. Robert was an extraordinarily gifted young man. His talents were multiple. His passions numerous. His outlooks wide-ranging. We loved to watch Robert literally fly through the air whilst playing football in Shanghai to help his beloved Sea Dragons team win the games. He excelled at basketball. He was intense, he was fun, he was interesting, he was curious. He loved travels. He appreciated all his experiences in China, Indonesia and around the world. He was a Global Citizen with a kind heart. Robert was a dear and loyal friend to our older son, always keeping in touch despite the distances. We will deeply, deeply miss him but cherish his memories, the precious moments we shared together and the lessons learnt. We wish Annabel, Meredith, William, Kristianna and Robert Sr strength and love.

We had a good sense he loved the city and was able to fit right in traveling the subways through Manhattan and the outer boroughs.
