Joy Speck Obituary

Joy Lee Speck
1923-2019
Joy Lee Savage Speck passed away peacefully in her sleep at the age of 95 on Tuesday, January 29, 2019. She was born at home December 7, 1923 in Port Neches, Texas, the third child of Ward Kelly Savage and Syble nee Woodruff. She was preceded in death by her parents, her older sister Birdie Donn Savage, brother Ward Kelly Savage Jr. and her husband of 73 years Dr. Norman Thomas Speck, who caller her "Hobby" as she was deserving of all of his time and affection.
As a child she attended First Baptist Church of Port Neches and after her marriage on August 31, 1946 she attended the First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Houston. She was a graduate of Port Neches High School where she was a majorette in the marching band. She then attended and graduated from Texas Women's University with a BS in Library Science. Later in life, she audited enough courses at Rice University to have received an MS in Art, and served as an Art Historian working with Dominique de Menil at the Rice University Museum. Joy was a lifetime member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
She is survived by her five sons Pat Kelly Speck MD, Don Thomas Speck DDS, Mark Lee Speck DDS (Sherry), Eric Johannes Speck and Norman Kirk Speck DDS (Paula), nine grandchildren Charles Norman Speck, Derek Alexander Speck, Dylan Savage Speck, Evan Pierce Speck, Travis Shane Speck, Rachel Joy Speck DDS, Shannon Collins Matthews, Sarah Emma Speck, Hannah Mary Speck, three great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and extended family members.
Her loves were her children, art-of-all-kinds, travel and the Braeswood Garden Club. She said "I have 5 only-sons" as each one thought they were deserving of all of her time and attention and she made them feel that way. She traveled the world with family and friends.
Visitation is scheduled for Sunday February 3, 2019 from 1:00 – 2:00pm in the Chapel of Angels at Forest Park Lawndale followed by a grave-side internment service officiated by Rev. McClanahan of First Evangelical Lutheran Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Alzheimer's Association or the First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Houston. Attendees are invited to a reception following the internment at the Speck family home.

Not sure what to say?

February 3, 2019

Dear Pat, Don, Mark, Eric, Kirk and Families,

I'm so sorry to hear about your loss of your mom, and so soon after the loss of your dad. I understand because my mom and dad both died within a three weeks of each other. Your mom and dad were wonderful people whom I will always hold dear in my heart as loving and kind friends to me and my family. Don, I am sure that your mom and dad look down from heaven and are pleased with your thoughtful and loving tribute to mom and dad. May God bless you and keep you during this sad time.

With heartfelt sympathy,

Roxanne Richter Weber

What can I say? Losing both of my parents in a three month period is never easy. But I was very lucky to have Norman and Joy Speck (Beetle and Hobby) for my parents. They always watched over me and had my back. Provided me with a great education, spiritual background and whenever I had a problem I knew I could rely on them to guide me properly. My dear mother made sure I knew how to dance (ballroom dancing lessons), ice skate, play piano and trumpet. She was a great Den Mother when I was in cub scouts. She made sure I knew how to swim and got me interested in competitive swimming on the Shamrock Hilton team when I was only 7 years old. It paid off for them as I was able to obtain a full swimming scholarship to Tulane University.

My father also got me interested in the Boy Scouts and made sure I knew how to do stuff that most city raised boys never learn. They are and always will be in my thoughts and prayers. My father was very devoted to my mother and I can only hope to be as devoted to my wife and sweetheart, Cindy Willhouse Speck, as he was to my mother for 73 years. I love you Mom and Dad and always will. You were the best parents anyone could hope for.

Number 2 son, Don Thomas Speck
