Dorothy Saar Obituary

Dorothy Saar 1924—2016
Dorothy Saar, 91 of Freeport, passed away Tuesday, April 5, 2016, at Presence St. Joseph Center. She was born September 22, 1924, in Mineral Point, Wisconsin to Henry and Loretta (Dochnahl) Schaaf. She was one of nine children; two are surviving; Peter Schaaf of Mineral Point, WI and Charlotte Douglas of Loves Park, IL. She married Eugene Saar in 1947, at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Mineral Point, WI, and became a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. They farmed a dairy set up near Freeport and bought it from the owner. At 4:30 a.m., they started milking and there were no trees around the buildings. Dorothy planted all the trees and the family lived off the garden produce. Times were hard and Dorothy and Eugene worked together as a team because they loved one another. She is survived by her daughter, Cynthia Anne of Freeport; sisters-in-law, Doris Schaaf, Grace Schaaf, Ida Hutchison; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Eugene Saar; 2 sons, Gerard and Eugene Saar; 3 brothers, John Schaaf, Paul Schaaf, Vince Schaaf; and 3 sisters, Ann Cutler, Mary Henkel, and Henrietta McCaulley.
A mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April, 15, 2016, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with Father Timothy Barr officiating. Burial will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. The rosary will be recited on at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 14, 2016, at Schwarz Funeral Home, 816 S. Galena Ave. Visitation will follow from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home, and at the church from 9:30 a.m. Friday until time of service. After interment, lunch will be served at Berg Hall. A memorial fund has been established in her memory. Dorothy kept a diary of her honeymoon. The last thing she wrote was: "The honeymoon is over, but I think a lifetime with Gene will be a lifetime honeymoon. He is wonderful." (A honeymoon of almost 65 years). To The Children of Dorothy Saar,

I did not know your mother. I read her
obituary. How wonderful she kept a diary of the honeymoon. Not many people can say their honeymoon lasted
a lifetime. Their marriage was truly
a Blessing. May your mother rest in
the arms of our Lord eternally.
