Mary Gleason Obituary

Gleason, Mary Joan "Jo" (Nee Hinton) Of Mequon, died peacefully on April 17, 2009, at age 79, surrounded by her family. Jo was born in Glen Ellyn, IL on March 12, 1930 to Antoinetta K. (nee Gissler) and Francis S. Hinton. She graduated from Glenbard High School in 1947 and Mount Mary College in 1951. During college, she met William B. Gleason; beginning June 27, 1951, they were married for 50 years until Bill's death in 2002. While raising her family, she worked briefly as a legal secretary and taught 3rd grade for 2 years at Holy Angels grade school. Jo is survived by her 8 children, Neil (Cynthia) Gleason of Madison, Elizabeth (John) Johnston of Whitefish Bay, Thomas (Martha) Gleason of Watertown, Kathryn (Dr. Scott) Lewis of Whitefish Bay, James Gleason of Wauwatosa, Nora Gleason (Carolyn Lieber) of Desert Hot Springs, CA, Anne (Dr. Gary) Meyer of Whitefish Bay and Molly (John) Farrell of Mequon. She is also survived by her younger sister, F. Carolyn (Dr. Albert) Thompson of Antigua, Guatemala, and 16 grandchildren Benjamin, Michael and Kara Gleason; Alexander, Kathryn and Caroline Johnston; Thomas Gleason; Patrick, Andrea and William Lewis; Margaret and Andrew Gleason; Maxwell and Charles Meyer; and William and Addison Farrell. She was preceded in death by her elder siblings, Annetta E. Hinton and Thomas W. Hinton. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 22, at 6:00 PM, at LUMEN CHRISTI CATHOLIC CHURCH, 2700 W. Mequon Rd., corner N. Range Line Rd. in Mequon. A Visitation and reception will be held at the Church following the Mass. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Francis Children's Center, 6700 N. Port Washington Rd, Milwaukee, WI 53217 or Christ Child Society, 4033 W. Good Hope Rd., Milwaukee WI 53209. Special thanks to the doctors, nurses and CNAs at Columbia St. Mary's-Ozaukee and Aurora VNA Zilber Family Hospice for their tender care. Jo Gleason was madly loved by her husband. She endeavored to raise 8 well-mannered children and remained their biggest cheerleader. Just as her nurture guided us through life, so her laconic humor carries us through grief. Memories of our mother will be often retold and forever cherished. SCHMIDT & BARTELT Funeral and Cremation Service Mequon 262-241-8085 www.schmidtandbartelt.com

It has been a very long time since I last saw your mother, but over the years I thought of her often. I knew you all starting with Neil sleeping on the sofa while we played bridge, knew Betsy through all the comings and goings, right down to Molly.
I will keep "Hinty" in my prayers. I think always of her at the Mount Mary bridge table, she was then known as "Hinty", and I remember the goodies that arrived with the laundry box.
My thoughts go out to all of you.

Your family is in my prayers. All the wonderful things offered here tell me that she was a very precious member of this world and will be missed. Take peace in the knowledge that she is at rest and re-united with her husband once more. A very special angel will watch over you and keep you safe.

My sorrow to the family, immediate and extended, and Mrs. Gleason's many friends, on her passing. The Gleason's are one of the finest families I have ever known, and the first family I met after moving to Shorewood in 1961. When my four brothers and sisters pulled me up the block on Murray Ave. to meet Jim, who has been a lifelong friend, and the other (then) five Gleason kids, I thought all families had at least five happy children. More children brought more happiness, and many years of happy marriage. I am certain Mrs. Gleason leaves her family with many happy memories to cherish.
