Arthur Higgins Obituary

Arthur William Higgins, a former Juneau resident, died March 13, 2011 in Vancouver, Washington following surgery for an aneurism. He was born in Seattle June 7, 1942 and grew up in Edmonds, Washington, graduating with honors from Edmonds High, where he also achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. He received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Washington and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Wisconsin. He served in the U.S. Army from 1965-68, including a year in Vietnam.

Arthur began gillnetting and trolling in SE Alaska on his boat the Ivaloo in 1963 while still in college, and resumed fishing on his boat the FV Freya after his discharge from the Army. He continued fishing until 1976 when he became a full time artist. He worked in a variety of media including oil, watercolor, jewelry making, serigraphy, woodcut, mixed metals fabrication and wood. Arthur completed more than 40 public art commissions including several 1% for art commissions in Alaska. His works in Alaska include multiple sculptures in Anchorage schools, one at Petersburg High School, and the mixed media sculpture on display in the CBJ School Board meeting room and smaller excerpt over the building entrance. In addition, he has work in the collection of the Alaska State Museum. For several years Arthur taught in Alaska's Artists in the Schools program and had assignments in rural communities and villages across the state. While living in Wasilla he was an active member and patron of the Visual Arts Center of Anchorage.

In later years Arthur also had a successful high end yard and garden sculpture business. He designed, manufactured and sold sculptures that would move in the wind for use in gardens, and on patios and decks. He sold these items through catalogs specializing in garden and home products, trade shows and his online website.

For most of his life Arthur was an avid builder and flyer of model airplanes, leaving behind literally hundreds of model airplanes that he designed and constructed. He was an active member and officer of five different model airplane clubs.

Arthur lived in Juneau 1970-74, and then moved to Wasilla with his young family. In 1986 he moved to Mosier, Oregon where he bought acreage and built a home and studio. He resided in Mosier until his death. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, William A. and Margaret L. Higgins. He is survived by his sons William A.(Liam and wife Lori) and Jacob; grandchildren Edgar, Margaret (Maggie) and Arthur W. (Torben); former wife Brenda Knapp, all of Juneau; and brother Ralph (and Jennifer) of Edmonds, Washington.

I am so sorry to hear about Arthur´s passing - and that it was so long ago. I have been enjoying a few of his amazingly beautiful garden sculptures since 1996 when I first met him at the ACC Craft Show. I was looking to purchase more to share with others and discovered his passing. If any of his family or friends are monitoring this page, please know that his artistry continues to be admired and respected.

"I was lucky enough to be apprenticed to Arthur Higgins during my last two years of high school, and worked at Oak Run Studios during my first few summers home from college. To say that this man was an influence on me - both artistically and personally - would be an incredible understatement. From the proper way to clean a brush to making my first edible meatloaf, this man taught me how to do so much.

"Although we would only catch up every few years or so, words can't say how much I'm going to miss him."

I have fond memories of Art and of the wonderful variety of art he created. Over the years I sold his work and one woodcut stands out in my mind as this quintessential Alaska landscape. The image is coming out of the mountains down into Sterling on the Kenai Peninsula. Everytime I take this drive I think of Art & I wonder if an artist realizes the impact they have on someone's life. An interesting guy!

I knew Art Higgins when he was involved with Art in the Schools Program. I was a young school administrator and Art was visiting Kaltag. He was doing prints at that point. He also was doing commercial illustrations under another name. Funny what an artist must do to make a living. We had a great time discussing art and how art fit into the world. He taught me a great deal. Although I have not seen him since I visited his studio in Wasilla, I think of him fondly often. Great guy......

Thank you so much for sharing Art's wonderful life history with all of us who might have known just one side of him! The arts people in Anchorage have been so saddened by this loss, as the word got out about Art's passing, so I appreciate seeing a written sentiment being shared. Thanks. Art leaves such a legacy of fabulous art in our schools and buildings throughout Anchorage. He was loved by so many and his work will continue that tradition as he meant it too!

I am so sorry for your loss. I live in Douglas, Alaska and work for a grade school in Juneau. I am so happy that Arthur shared his talents as artist in the schools. Bless him for sharing his art work at the museum. Growing up in Hood River, Oregon, I went to Mosier often. I am so happy that Arthur got to enjoy the area and he was surrounded by his loved ones. My condolences to all of you. Marti Peck Bernardez
