John Cadigan Obituary

John J. Cadigan USCG Capt. (RET)

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Captain Jack Cadigan, a husband, a father and grandfather.

Jack's life as a U.S. Coast Guard Captain, teacher, and small business owner was full and varied ending in his 85th year. For 20 years he successfully battled colon cancer, followed by Waldenstrom's Macroglobulinemia.

Jack was born in Boston, Massachusetts. After graduating from The Boston Latin School, he enrolled in Boston College at the age of 16 and graduated Cum Laude with a degree in Physics and Math. His first post graduate job was with Sperry on Long Island, N.Y. Jack joined the US Coast Guard in 1955 and retired as a Captain 30 years later.

During his 30 years of military service Jack had many unit assignments both ashore and afloat. Among these he was a Physics instructor at the US Coast Guard Academy, served as Operations Officer aboard the USCG MCCULLOUGH, Executive Officer of the USCG Sail Training Ship EAGLE, "America's Tall Ship" (with multiple Atlantic crossings), Commanding Officer of the USCG Cutter DEPENDABLE and Commanding Officer of the USCG Cutter MELLON.

In 1964 while serving as boat officer of the USCG Cutter ROCKAWAY, Jack led the Coast Guard's rescue of crew members from the sinking cargo vessel, SMITH VOYAGER, for which he was awarded the distinguished US Coast Guard Medal for voluntary heroic conduct. The challenging rescue was conducted by Jack and his crew navigating a 26 foot wooden boat in heavy twenty foot seas. The award read in part; "Lieutenant Commander Cadigan displayed outstanding courage, skill, and initiative during this rescue operation.  His selfless actions, perseverance, and unwavering devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Coast Guard."

Jack especially enjoyed his service as a Submarine Warfare Specialist while he was detailed to the U.S. Navy. Later in his career he was selected by the US Navy Commander in Chief as a Task Force Commander for all able Atlantic exercises due to his performance in Operation "Ocean Venture," NATO's 1981 naval exercise involving over 300 ships off the coast of Norway. Jack successfully hid 3 aircraft carriers from Soviet surveillance for nearly a week. This was influential in the Navy recognizing that use of Coast Guard assists was meaningful in military exercises.

Jack and his wife Liv were deployed to Coast Guard assignments including Panama City Florida, Guantanamo Bay Cuba, Oahu Hawaii and Governors Island New York. Throughout their 54 years of marriage, they added five children to their family (along with 2 parrots, a canary and 4 dogs!). In 1985 he retired from the US Coast Guard with his final assignment in Juneau, Alaska.

Immediately following retirement, Jack went back to school and graduated with a Masters Degree in Teaching from the University of Alaska Southeast in 1987 at 55 years old. Jack taught physics and math for Alaska's Distant Education School for 13 years. During this time in 1991 he was honored to share the Christa McAuliffe National Fellowship Award for Innovation in Education with a Juneau colleague, and 25 others selected across the U.S.

Finally, Jack's third career launched at 68 years old with a whale watching business called "Adventures In Alaska." He loved getting back out on the water again, captaining the vessel SCANIA and sharing his enthusiasm for Alaska with countless passengers. He operated this business with his son-in-law for 12 years and Jack was still actively managing the bookings up until four months ago.

In the course of Jack's multiple professions and lifetime, he was proud to be involved in his community as well as supporting roles for his children. He was an active member of Resurrection Lutheran Church, Sons of Norway, the USCG Auxiliary, the Charter Captain's Association, various political organizations, as well as a swim coach for the "Coast Guard Cutters" kids team, a Brownie Leader and Sunday School Teacher (to name a few).

Jack's family was the most important part of his life. He is survived by his wife Liv. Children Anne-Lise Hagevig (Bill), Tanja Cadigan Corbett (Alan), Kristin Cadigan McAdoo (Jason), Jason Cadigan and Mark Cadigan. Grandchildren Adele Hagevig, Al Hagevig, Isabella Cadigan McAdoo and Drew Cadigan McAdoo. Additionally, nieces in Norway Linda Strand and Monica Jacobsen. Jack was preceded in death by brother Colonel Francis C. Cadigan Jr. MD (RET) and sister-in-law Claire Cadigan.

-Fair Winds and Following Seas-

Memorial Service to be held at Resurrection Lutheran Church (740 W. Tenth Street, Juneau), at 3pm on Sunday May 5th. Captain Jack Cadigan will be interred in Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors at a later date.

In lieu of flowers the Cadigan Family request remembrances to be made to either the Juneau Cancer Connection or Resurrection Lutheran Church.

Jack was a long time supporter of the Cancer Connection. He battled colon cancer for 13 years, followed by Waldenstrom's Macroglobulinemia (a rare form of leukemia) for 7 years. He served as a volunteer mentor with the International Macroglobulinemia Foundation to persons worldwide from South Africa to China.

As a member of the Resurrection Lutheran Church since first moving to Juneau in 1966, Jack was honored to be on the church council, part of the choir and specifically dedicated to the church food pantry which provides meals to over 1,500 people annually.

My family sends it condolences and prayers for strength at this time of your loss. My fondest memory of Jack was when I was 7 years old and he took me out on the Coast Guard Cutter in Panama City, Florida for my 7th birthday, complete with cake and the crew singing happy birthday! An amazing man, father, friend and husband. Jack will be well remembered by us all and his memory will live on.

We share your grief and pray for guidance and healing for you and the family. I have found a belated mentor in Capt Jack from his comments through the Sea Vets and private messaging. I know he is at peace and watching over us as we take the helm of life until we meet again in the eternal Cutter, calm seas and infinite vision. God Bless all of you.

We met Jack and Liv on Governors Island in New York harbor. I worked with Jack in setting up a swim team for the children on the Island. Every summer we went to the old Barnegatt Light Station. 6 adults and 13 kids. When my wife graduated from Hunter College Liv was instrumental in my giving Gayle a surprise graduation party. I took my son to their house when the Bishop of India was there for dinner. Andrew was an infant. We got to visit them in Juneau and go out on a whale watching trip. Even though I was in the Coast Guard my memories of Jack are about the family.

I do not believe that I met Jack Cadigan although our paths crossed on many occasions. When I took command of SALVIA my executive officer had been a Deck Watch Officer on the DEPENDABLE and the sea stories concerning Jack began. When he was in LANTAREA, I was CO of the ALERT and we shared similar 210 experiences. After joining Sea Veterans of a CG website I read often Jack's sage advice and wisdom and based on my own 29 year experience felt a strong kinship. Jack has crossed the bar and he will be sorely missed by all.

Cap'n Jack has blessed many, many during his life and of that number I am proud to be a part. My prayers are that all his family and associates will retain the things he tried to diligently to share in an effort to be a blessing. Many of us have changed lives as a direct result of his life.

My condolences to Liv and Anna-Lisa with the passing of Jack. He has gone to meet my wife Carma in the here after. I remember you all fondly from our time on the CCG Dependable and the great times I experienced as a new Warrant Officer. We never crossed paths again during our careers though I wish we had. Fair winds and filling seas to you Captain Jack until we meet again in the after life.

On behalf of the Members of the C.G. Sea Veterans of America, our condolences to the Family of "Capt. Jack". Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at a time we wish would never come. Capt Jack was a Light among many that shone brighter that we would be able to see the way, stay on course, and find safe harbor when our job was done. That light has dimmed slightly but will never be extinguished. His leadership in our Service will always be paramount in our hearts and minds, and to the many who are here because of his service.

Fair Winds and Following Seas, Capt. Jack. Until we see you once again, over the bar, you may stand relieved of the watch.

Captain Jack. I am honored to be able to have had a couple of brief "Conversations" with you on the Coast Guard Channel. I so appreciated your stories and the legacy you have left for your family and shipmates. My condolences to your wife and children and grandchildren. You were a great Coast Guard Captain.

I was very sorry to read of Capt Jack's crossing of the bar. My deepest condolences to his family, shipmates and friends. I only knew him through his stories and his posts online with otherwise minimal direct interaction with him, but I greatly enjoyed the opportunity to learn and live vicariously through his experiences and writings. I am sorry that we will never be able to meet in person, as it is always an honor to meet and shake the hand of a Coast Guard hero. As others who knew him better have acknowledged, his leadership and mentorship of those who sailed with him made an immeasurable positive influence on their lives and careers, which was of great benefit not only to Coast Guard sailors coming up through the ranks, but also to those in distress and need of salvation from the U.S. Coast Guard. Capt Jack's post-CG career as an award-winning educator would have positively impacted so many more lives ashore, as well as those who were able to experience a slice of his Alaska through his charter service, too. Home is the sailor, home from the sea, A life well-lived, indeed. Fair winds and following seas, sir. You will be missed greatly by all those who knew you.
