THOMAS RIEGER Obituary

(1954-2010) Tom Rieger, loving father and friend, lost his brief and courageous battle with cancer on August 3, 2010, while in Houston, Texas on his way to receive further cancer treatments. Tom leaves and will be missed by his son, Andrew Hogan Rieger, his loving and beloved companion Kathryn McDaniel, his aunts Jane Krakauer, Joey Goldsmith and Janet Roston, and his hundreds of friends across the country. Tom was born on December 15, 1954 in Kansas City to James and Elinor Rieger. Tom attended Pembroke Hill School, where he was the last straight-on kicker on the football team, played varsity tennis, was class treasurer, a student teacher, business manager of the yearbook and president of the American Field Service organization. He received Pembroke's Trevor Mount Peace Prize in recognition of his gift for bringing people together, a trait that served him well throughout his life. Tom graduated from Occidental College in Pasadena, California in 1977, where he played club ice hockey and was a member of the ATO fraternity. Tom began his career with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation in Texas upon graduation. His mother's illness in 1977 brought Tom back to Kansas City, where he worked for Mercantile Bank for several years before embarking on a career in sports management and promotion. Tom enjoyed helping new teams break into the Kansas City market. He was the General Manager of the Kansas City Blades hockey team, worked for the Comets indoor soccer team, was General Manager of the Kansas City Explorers World Team Tennis team, and was General Manager of NHL 21, an organization that sponsors and promotes National Hockey League exhibition games in Kansas City and worked to bring an NHL team to this city. Tom served as Director of Business Development for National Sports Services, a national sports consulting firm. Tom co-chaired the Bacchus Ball and was a long-time board member of the Kansas City Crime Commission, where he was instrumental in creating the Crime Stoppers TIPS hotline. Tom loved life and managed to find the positives in any situation. Tom became a proud, loving, and devoted father when, in 1987, he and his then wife and lifelong friend, Nancy, gave birth to their only child, Andy. Andy, a graduate of Shawnee Mission East and SMU, is now working in Dallas. Tom was loving and steadfast to his companion Kat, who was with Tom to the very end of his battle with cancer. Tom was a true friend to hundreds of people in Kansas City and across the country. Tom's house was always open for friends to visit, and he loved hosting Monday night dinners for whoever felt like dropping by with a dish. He loved to cook, travel, and spend time with those close to him. His philosophy was to simplify and enjoy life and always let his friends and family know how much he cared about them. He knew that the friends that matter don't mind, and the ones that mind don't matter. A celebration of Tom's life will take place on Thursday, August 12, 2010, at the Marriott Muehlebach Hotel in Downtown Kansas City, beginning at 5:30 p.m. True to Tom's wishes, there will be music, food, drinks, balloons, and fireworks. No flowers, please, but feel free to make contributions in Tom's memory to the American Cancer Society or a charity of your choice. I was a friend of Tom's back in the early 20's. On a whim, I thought he would be on Facebook. I found this. I am so completely blown away...three years after the fact. To Andy, your dad and I talked for hours about you and my sons and about being single parents. He loved you more than words would ever encompass. I am at one of the greatest losses for words I have ever been. I am so, so so sorry and sad.

I am so very sad to hear of Tom's passing. He was great to work with during the Blades & Explorer days. Better than that, he was a friend sharing Andy stories, KC updates and his positive outlook on all of life's challenges. My prayers are with you.

I had the pleasure of knowing Tom when he and Nancy stayed with us kids (20 years ago!) while my parents were away. Tom had a terrific sense of humor (thank goodness) and helped keep everyone's sanity. We were so fortunate for his compassion and to have known Tom. Andy we are sorry for your father's loss at both your young ages. And Nancy, thank you for showing how family and your friendship with Tom especially are important for a lifetime.

My love and sympathy,

Andy and Kat,
I have known Tom since we were neighbors and shared a fence growing up. I remember lots of afternoons by the pool...I was the young girl tagging along with my mom for a visit! Tom was always so warm and genuinely interested in what I was doing. As we grew up and age didn't make as much difference, Tom's friendship continued. Amazing we ended up supporting the same teams our kids played on! He was always enthusiastic and supportive and just a fun guy to be around! I know he will be greatly missed and like his parents, I will remember him fondly always. My thoughts and prayers are with you as you learn to live life with his memories.

Tom was a warm and caring man who always seemed to have a smile on his face. When he was GM of the Explorers in the early years, I produced radio and TV commercials for them as well as broadcast some of the matches. He never seemed to lose his cool over anything and loved what he was doing. He will be missed.

Tom was the picture of graciousness. It didn't matter where he saw me, at the grocery store, a party, sporting event or fundraiser. He would make a bee-line to make sure he said hello and catch up on "me". We can all learn from Tom on how to treat one another. He truly cared about each and every one of us and he made sure you knew it. Thanks, Tom. I'll see you on the other side, friend.

What a wonderful and caring guy. I always knew Tom with a smile on his face and quick wit. Although I have been out of KC for thirty years, when ever I saw Tommy it was like yesterday. May he rest in peace.

We are all better off as a result of knowing Tom. He was the most positive person I ever met. In the early Blades days, he kept his composure when things weren't going well. He was a great friend who will be missed by many.

I was fortunate to work with Tom as a team(GM/Head Coach) for the first 9 years of the KC Explorers franchise. Tom had incredible people and organizational skills. We stayed good friends over the years and he will be missed by so many close friends, but I know he is smiling down on us from a much better place. Tom, we love you and we miss you.

The largest crowd ever to see an NHL game in Kansas City was 17,250 at Kemper Arena as the St Louis Blues took on the Chicago Blackhawks. Tom Rieger led the charge. Along with 10 years of stellar leadership of the Explorers...He will always be my friend. Paul McGannon NHL21 Kansas City, Mo.

Tom and I played tennis at The Carriage Club in the 90's.
I admired Tom's initiative in being part of the group that brought The Explorers to Kansas City.
We saw each other infrequently over the past five years, but enjoyed that he always had a ready smile and a sincere interest in catching up.
I will miss him.

I knew Tom during high school and always thought he was a wonderful person. We lost touch until he moved next door to my parents on 66th Terrace twenty five years later and I had the pleasure of seeing him again on a regular basis. I am so sad that he is gone from this earth, but so happy that I had the great experience of knowing him.

I worked with Tom at the American Royal Center/Kemper Arena. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. He will be missed.

Dear Andy, Kat, Family and Friends,
Tom lived his life to the very end with hope and love in his heart. I know he wanted more time with all of you to continue his passions in life. Although I new him as a little boy he taught me how to care and nurture little ones and most importantly how to change a diaper. I know he wants us to celebrate his life and appreciate all that we experience in this life. He is a great teacher for all of us. I know you will miss him and will also have him with you in your hearts and minds.
I will not be able to attend Tom's celebration but I will be lighting candles and celebrating in Oregon.

Kat...so very sorry to hear about Tom, even though I had just received the good fortune of meeting and getting to know him, he was such a welcoming person and felt I knew him forever...I know you were with him and there isn't anywhere else he would have wanted to be! He was truly a good and faithful servant, doing what he was blessed to do!
