I was a good friend of Nick in high school and we had a lot of fun times together. He was a great quarterback and made us a proud as a school to have him.
I will always remember that when my daughter was attending UT she had just been home and had some dental work done. She went back to school and called me a couple of days later in a lot of pain(dry socket). I picked up the phone and called Nick and he told me to tell her to come to his office. She went right over and he took care of her and would not even send me a bill. That was Nick and I will always remember him for his kindness and frienship.

Nick and i attended db at the same time. i was two years ahead of him in school. i do remember how talented he was on the football field , his being an hs all-american was really special and well deserved. he has certainly left a fine legacy for his family to cherish. his work with the boys club and other social issues in a supportering manner speaks highly of Nick and his concern for those who are less fortunate is an example of his character. i extend my deepest sympathy to the family. my prayers are with you all. may God bless.

So sorry to hear of Nicks passing. I knew Nicky in junior high and high school. He was one of the warmest people I have been in my life time. I have thought of him often. Last time I saw him (years ago) he was walking down the street in Kingpsort. That BIG warm smile spoke a thousand words. I know his family and all who knew him will greatly miss him.

I was just online looking up Dr. Nick's phone number to make an appt. when I saw the terrible news. He was my favorite dentist - ever. He made "going to the dentist" such a happy experience. I'm so sad. I'll miss how he would say, "how ya doing, Sport?"

Doc Showalter was a person all of us strive to be; he was kind, caring and treated everyone like his own family. I was lucky enough to be there for several of the Tennessee football weekends that he and Mrs. Showalter hosted at their home, each time feeling blessed to know such wonderful people. The stories and life lessons he imparted us will forever be with me. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Showalter family.

Nick and I went through Dobyns Bennett High School together and then were back together at UT Dental School. He going through dental school and I going through dental hygiene school. We were not in any classes together at UT, but there were many memories from D-B! One in particular was chemistry class. I sat in the front and he was in the back row. Almost every day I would have to pick out spit balls from my hair--not only was Nick great at throwing footballs, but he had great aim with spit balls too!! I was just at Emory and Henry Homecoming and the first thing two friends told me when I saw them was that Nick had passed away. He was a great guy, he was a fun guy, and even though I had not seen him in years, I am so sad and sorry for his personal family and his dental family.

Nick was one of the most generous and selfless individuals I have ever met. Every year, he and Gail would house 15 of his "sons" for a Vols weekend. Nicky was my cousin. I had not seen him since his college days. His mother, Stella, and my mother, Zell McDaniel, were sisters. Stella loved her sons, Nick & Pat. She had a big smile , hearty laugh, and a song for any occasion . Reading the guest book it seems many of the traits that endeared Nicky to all stemmed from his mother. Now they are reunited in heaven.

I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of "Dr. Nick". He was a great Vol and a great Dobyns-Bennett Indian.
"Nicky" was the quarterback at Dobyns-Bennett when I first started going to games. When he committed to UT I became a Vol fan. It seems like only a few years ago.

I never had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Showalter, but he brought a smile to my face every time I passed him on my way to work. As a fellow convertible owner, it was a pleasure to see someone else enjoying their ride as much as I do. What a shock to find out this sad news of my dear friend Nicks passing. I knew something was wrong because every day as I drove pass and noticed his car was not at the office I first thought Nick's gone on vacation then when the second and third week went by and still no one at the office I actually went by Sat to see a note on the door. I knew something was wrong but had no way of reaching any of the girls in the office. Nick was the kindess dentist you could ever want. He remembered everything about you. Any time he had a new staff person to join the group he would always tell them the unusually things that had happen about you to the new gal on board. Nick knew his patients and I am so glad he was my Dr. and friend for so long. To the girls in the office I know Nick ran a tight ship and it was worth it. Praying for peace and comfort in the following days and months. And might I also add Nick loved and adored his wife, children and grand children he shared many fun trips with me. I know they have some great memories to hold onto.

Dr. Showalter is the only dentist I've ever been to in my almost 19 years. Every time I went, even though it had been half a year and probably hundreds of patients since he'd seen me last, he always remembered what I was up to and what was going on in my life. He loved hearing about where I'd traveled last and always remembered where I'd most recently been. He always asked about school and was really proud when I finally chose a college and went off to school in Pennsylvania. He was a great man and will definitely be missed. My thoughts are with his family in this sad and shocking time.

"Doc Show" as we called him, hosted 15 to 20 of Zach's friends from Miami Ohio every single year for almost 15 years. The menu never changed, tickets to a UT game, 20 lbs of beef tender, and more fun than a barrel of monkeys. He was a second father to many of us and sure made each of us feel that we were as special as his own family. The legend will live on through the spirit and energy that Mamma Show, Addy, Zach, Chad, Tate and little Z will undoubtedly carry on.

I am stunned. When I opened the paper this morning, I saw that smiling face. My husband Cory and all 3 of my sons have been patients of Dr. Showalter since 1984. I always looked forward to my visits and hearing him laugh at how silly life can be. I wish I would have had a chance to thank him for being so wonderful but most of all thank him for giving my youngest son some very powerful life advise. I really believe he helped him to turn his life around. I am not sure he would be doing this well had it not been for Nick. So now, a little too late, I say thank you Nick Showalter. I will never forget you. My heartfelt condolances to his family. You are all in my prayers.
