NELSON KAI NG Obituary

Nelson Kai Ng, 34, went to be with his Savior August 15, 2008. Nelson was born November 10, 1973, to Kai Wu (Joe) Ng and Kang Mui (Betty) Tang in Scottsdale, Ariz., where he lived until enrolling at Central Washington University in 1991. Nelson served as a Living Group Advisor at Barto and Beck Hall while earning a major in criminal justice. During this time, he was a dispatcher for the CWU police department and was active in the Washington State Patrol Explorers program, earning numerous awards including Most Inspirational and Explorer of the Year in 1993. Nelson greatly enjoyed serving as a reserve officer for the Ellensburg Police Department.
After graduation, Nelson was hired as a campus officer (626), graduating from the Basic Law Enforcement Academy with class 443. Nelson married his college sweetheart Anna Marie Stranberg on August 19, 1995. On August 15, 1997, Nelson joined EPD (126). Nelson's pursuit of excellence was reflected in his service as a recruiter, field-training officer, translator, hostage negotiator, less-lethal instructor, and firearms instructor. Most recently, Nelson created a safety plan for each school in the Ellensburg School District, for which he was named Officer of the Year in January 2008.
June 1, 2008, Nelson was promoted to a sergeant at EPD (113). In the last month, Nelson was earnestly training to pass the physical entrance exam for the EPD rapid response team; joining the tactical team would have been the realization of a life-long dream for Nelson.
Nelson lived by the Warrior's Ethos: I will never accept defeat. I will never quit. I will never leave a fallen comrade. I will always place the mission first. While he spoiled his daughter like a princess, he also taught her strength and wrote her a family ethos: No panicking. Do not let the fear control you. Stay in the fight. Pull yourself together and get it done.
Nelson's passions included his wife and daughter, walking his dog Ithaca, eating, cardio and weight training, firearms, BMWs, classical music, watching action movies in his home theater, his Star Wars collection, Hawaiian Punch, white T-shirts, knit shorts and Tevas, and air conditioning.
An affable and generous man, Nelson made and impression where ever he went and was widely regarded as a leader and mentor. He will be remembered for his dry sense of humor and the enthusiastic way he greeted fellow officers as his "bro-bros." Nelson ended every conversation with family by reminding that he loved them; he was a dedicated husband, proud father, and a devoted son and brother.
Nelson attended Our Lady of Perpetual Hope in Arizona, the Foursquare Church in Ellensburg, and was a member of Chestnut Street Baptist Church. Nelson's faith was a source of great strength and guidance in his daily life.
Nelson is survived by his wife Anna Ng, his daughter Elise Ng, his parents Kai Wu Ng and Kang Mui Ng, his brother Paul J. Ng and his wife Jeni (Cheng) Leang and their son Nathan, born 08-08-08. He was preceded in death by his sister Lily who died of leukemia in 1998 at age 25.
A viewing will take place Thursday from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at the Steward and Williams Tribute Center. A community memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 22, 2008, at the Ellensburg High School. A graveside service for family and public service personnel only will take place immediate following at the Holy Cross cemetery. The community is invited to a memorial reception at EHS to celebrate Nelson's life.
In lieu of flowers, Nelson requested that donations be made to the Ellensburg Christian School, PO Box 426, Ellensburg, WA 98926.
The Nelson K. Ng Memorial Fund has been established at Yakima Federal Savings and Loan.

I had the pleasure of attending and being a comrade of Nelson while attending the Basic Law Enforcement Police Academy with him during Academy Class 443. I am saddened by Nelson’s passing, but must celebrate Nelson’s life and remember that Nelson was called home by his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and he is now in Heaven. My sincere condolences go out to Mrs. Anna Ng, their precious daughter, Elise, and to the entire Ng family. I pray that God will provide you all with comfort during your time of need and always.

Running down the ridge on Wednesday night I saw the most beautiful, vivid rainbow in front of me than I had ever seen in my life. I had been thinking about Nelson on my run after seeing the photograph left in the guest box at the top of the ridge. I did not know him well, but know that he was a kind, generious, compassionate person. Blessings to the family as they grieve this tragic loss. I wish you the peace that seeing the rainbow gave to me and the hope that the little blessings in life we sometimes take for granted will give you comfort as you hold him dearly in your hearts forever. Into every life a little rain must fall....and losing one you love is like a storm....but storms are passing....

Nelson was the first person I met when I arrived at CWU. He was my LGA, a fellow Explorer and my friend. He encouraged me not only through his words, but the way he lived his life every day. I am a better person for having known Nelson and I hope that you can find comfort in knowing that his life goes on through the many people he inspired. I share in your grief and send my love to the entire Ng family, his friends and the Ellensburg community who undoubtedly feels this great loss.

Anna and family:
I don't have the words to express my feeling for you and Nelson. It was my privilege to call him my friend. Go with God.

I was an LGA in Barto at the same time as Nelson. I was also Anna's roommate. Nelson was always ready to greet people with a big smile and genuinely cared about people as individuals. He will be missed. My deepest sympathies go out to the Ng family. My prayers are with you.

Dear Anna,

I was very sad to hear of the loss of Nelson; sad for him, sad for you and sad for the community. I remember him and you as a couple of the best CWU residence hall staff we ever had. You both also struck me as great human beings who I was proud to work with and who I learned from. You and Nelson are truly in my heart, and know that I'm here for you and your daughter.

With love,

To Nelson's family: In this hour of loss and sorrow, there is little words can do...may the sincere concern of others help to comfort you. I knew Nelson well when he was on CWU residence hall staff. I worked with Nelson with the hall finances and programming. He planned and organized programs for his residents and always went the extra mile. He was a great leader and mentor for the students and became a great law officer for our community.

Mrs. Ng,

My heart is with you in this time. I pray God wraps you and Elise up in his arms and gives you the kind of peace that doesnt make sense. Though the earth should change, and the mountians slip into the heart of the sea; God is our refuge and strength. (Psalm 46)

Much Love,

I had the pleasure of becoming a friend of Nelson's through the LGA program at Central. What a wonderful person- so upbeat, inspiring, and caring. It has been a long time since Nelson and I last crossed paths in Ellensburg....I am so glad to have had that opportunity to talk and laugh with him one last time. My thoughts and prayers are with Nelson's family during this devastating time.
