Jack Angeles Obituary

ANGELES, Jack Of Santa Monica, California, passed away suddenly and peacefully following a brief hospitalization at Kaiser Permanente Sunset. Born John Joseph Cangilos in Albany, New York on April 7, 1950, Jack was an avid debater and eloquent speaker whose debate team captured first place in New York State in 1966 and whose selection as the 1968 American Legion National Oratorical Champion led to his being the youngest person to address the National Republican Convention that same year. Jack graduated from Holy Cross College in Worcester, MA where he was valedictorian of the Class of 1972 and was a Root Tilden Scholar at New York University School of Law (J.D.'75).
A member of both the New York and California Bars, Jack clerked for The Honorable William Hughes Mulligan of the Second Circuit Court of Appeals and U.S. District Court Judge James Foley in the Northern District of New York. He practiced law with Donavan, Leisure, Newton & Irvine in New York City and Whiteman Osterman & Hanna LLP in Albany, New York before moving to California in 1982. Jack variously worked for Columbia Pictures and Wilshire Court Productions, a wholly owned subsidiary of Paramount, where he was head of business and legal affairs. While teaching as an adjunct professor at Pepperdine Law School, Jack pursued his love for acting. A member of AEA and SAG, Jack played the role of Mr. Tuttle in "Saved by the Bell" and had guest appearances in other supporting roles including those in "Falcon Crest" and "Trial by Jury." Jack is survived by his two sisters, Rosemary Maye of Schenectady, New York and Margaret Cangilos-Ruiz of Skaneateles, New York; by his sister-in-law, Lyse Cangilos of Albany, New York; his brothers-in-law, Richard Maye and Francisco Ruiz; five nieces and nephews: Anne Cangilos Zylick of Orlando, Florida (wife of Justin Zylick), Matthew Maye of Austin, Texas, David Maye of Schenectady, NY; godson, Sebastian Ruiz of New York City and Rebecca Ruiz, also of New York; great nephew Jackson Zylick and many cousins. Jack will be sorely missed by his family members and his many friends on both the East and West coasts who readily appreciated his infectious laugh, generous heart, kind spirit, good humor and wise counsel. A memorial service commemorating Jack's life will be held at All Saints Church, 504 North Camden Drive, Beverly Hills, California on Wednesday, May 6th at 3:00 p.m. The service, to which all are invited, will be followed by a reception with family members in the court yard. Contributions in Jack's memory may be made to Episcopal Relief & Development Gifts For Life (Animals and Agriculture) online or through the catalog available at www.er-d.org/GiftsForLife or to the charity of your choice.

Didn't know him personally but I could tell he was a nice man and funny from saved by bell. Especially the episodes with him as the economics and driver's education teacher. Sorry for your loss. RIP Mr. Angeles aka mr Tuttle.

I was so sad to read that Jack had passed away. I wish I knew why... I am glad I was able to permanently keep this guestbook open because I know there are other fans, like me, of his that will wish to pay their respects in the future. Rest in peace, "Mr. Tuttle"!

Jack Angeles played a great character on Saved by the Bell, Mr. Tuttle... appearing in some of the best episodes of the series such as Buddy Bands, Driver's Ed, and Love Machine. He will be missed.

Jack's "Mr. Tuttle" was one of the most popular characters on Saved By The Bell. His interactions with Screech and Mr. Belding were among the most memorable of the entire series. Jack brought joy to so many and will be missed.

Jack and I were classmates at Holy Cross and spoke when we discovered we were residing in California. I enjoyed his friendly advice and conversation. I will miss him and know personally how well thought of he was by his classmates and many friends. I am so sorry for your loss and ours.

I will never forget John's famous"Seance" in the halls of Wheeler. Simply a brilliant mind and wonderful person. The kind of man one never forgets. God Bless.

Jack was The Shining Star in the Galaxy of stars on Carlin I. What a priviledge to know his laugh and brilliant wit.

Little did I know that 24 years later, as I sat watching with my kids, their favorite show, "Saved by the Bell", that Jack would appear on the screen as the lovable principal, Mr. Tuttle. I startled my kids when I screamed out, "Hey! That's Jack Cangelos!!!"

At our 25th reunion, Jack signed and sent me the publicity photo of him as "Mr. Tuttle" which my kids still cherish.
God bless you, Jack!!

Jack was one of the first people I met when the Holy Cross Class of 1972 gathered in Worcester in September 1968. He was from Albany, NY. I was from Utica, NY and we were both born on the same day, April 7, 1950. My first impression was that he was a truly nice person with great joy and enthusiasm. I am happy to see that he carried those traits with him throughout his life. Even now, I can summons up a memory of his smiling face and that great voice. May he rest in peace.

I first met Jack in Professor McKenna's Intermediate French class in the fall of 1968. He was the brightest student in that class and most others throughout the next 4 years. I appreciate his many talents -- legal whiz, orator and thespian, among others. I wish I had stayed in touch over the years.

Jack was a dear friend in high school, at Holy Cross and for all of the years following our graduation. He certainly struck all who listened to him at our 25th reunion and I recall the dining hall in riveted silence as he offered a wonderful tribute to Holy Cross and John Brooks. Jack was similarly impressive as our high school valedictorian and valedictorian of our graduating class. Our entire family treasured his company, wisdom, humor and wonderful personality and we will miss him deeply.

Jack's speech at our 25th reunion from Holy Cross was a magnificent one which struck all of us who listened as a masterpiece. We enjoyed his company immensely and he shall be missed.

We were the best of friends since our first days of high school in 1964, and now after 45 years, Jack's absence is a very hard reality to accept. He loved his family with a great passion, and he loved his friends.
