Jeffrey Eckardt Obituary

November 13, 2020 Jeffrey John Eckardt, M.D., former Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at UCLA, and Helga and Walter Oppenheimer Professor and Chair of Musculoskeletal Oncology, passed away in his home on November 13, 2020.Born at the U.S. Marine Hospital in Staten Island, New York, he spent the first years of his childhood in Fanwood, New Jersey before moving to Buffalo, New York, and later to Scarsdale, New York. He graduated from Edgemont High School in 1963, receiving the Bausch & Lomb Science Award. He matriculated to Williams College and graduated cum laude in Biology in 1967. His passion for medicine brought him to Cornell University Medical School, where he earned his M.D. in 1971, followed by a medical internship at the New York Hospital and Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital from 1971-1972.In July 1972, Dr. Eckardt began his military service with the United States Navy. He commissioned as a Navy Flight Surgeon through the Vietnam War-era physician draft program known as the Berry Plan, and completed two deployments to the Western Pacific in 1973 and 1974 with Carrier Air Wing Nine onboard the attack aircraft carrier USS Constellation. He recorded in excess of 30 carrier catapult launches and successful recoveries in the tactical jet aircraft of the day. He remained extraordinarily proud of his military service and the friendships made during that time throughout the remainder of his life. He was promoted to the rank of Commander, and received an honorable discharge in 1980.Dr. Eckardt joined the UCLA Orthopaedic Department in 1975 as an orthopaedic resident, succeeded by a year at the Mayo Clinic for an orthopaedic oncology fellowship, and then served on the UCLA faculty starting in 1980. During his time at UCLA, he pioneered the techniques of limb salvage surgery, now considered to be the standard of care, through the design and implantation of large metal endoprostheses in patients with malignant tumors of the extremities. In his nearly 40 years of faculty service, he built the largest prospectively collected series of limb salvage reconstructions in the United States. He is also well known for co-organizing some of the original trials demonstrating the effectiveness of chemotherapy in soft tissue sarcomas. Dr. Eckardt was named the Helga and Walter Oppenheimer Professor and Chair of Musculoskeletal Oncology in July 2001, and in April 2011 he was named Professor and Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at UCLA, which he held until April 2017. On July 1, 2015 he was promoted to the academic rank of Professor, Above Scale and designated a Distinguished Professor.Dr. Eckardt was a true physician, caring for his patients like they were family. Among his many awards, he was most proud of receiving the Dr. Sherman Melinkoff Faculty Award given annually at the UCLA Medical School Graduation "To the faculty member whose teaching exemplifies his dedication to the art of medicine and to the finest in doctor-patient relationships." A dedicated physician, mentor, and friend, Dr. Eckardt was a force of nature with a northward moral compass, had an unflinching dedication to his patients and colleagues, and demonstrated an enormous zest for life. His humanity, morality, and work ethic will continue to be memorialized in the Jeffrey J. Eckardt Chair in Orthopaedic Oncology at UCLA established in 2020.He retired from UCLA on June 28, 2019 after 39 years of faculty service. In spite of his considerable research and clinical accomplishments, he always believed that his most important legacy was his family and children.Dr. Eckardt was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, three children, and his two grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, brother-in-law, and their children's families. A private memorial service with full military honors will be held at a later date.As a final act of service and patient care, Dr. Eckardt requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Jeffrey J. Dr. Eckardt has often been on my mind, since he was the incredible surgeon that performed limb saving surgery on my son on his 22nd birthday. He developed a wonderful friendship with Joey and we always enjoyed seeing him on our chemo visits at UCLA. Although he did everything he could for Joey, the cancer spread to his lungs and we lost him 19 days before his 23rd birthday. We received the kindest letter from Dr. Eckardt during that time, in which he stated that Joey was a favorite of his. I continued sending him Christmas cards up until he retired. I always wondered how he was doing. Needless to say, I just came upon this sad news and it hurts my heart. I´m happy to know however, that this wonderful man is undoubtedly cracking jokes with my son in Heaven and anxiously awaiting everyone´s arrival. Thank you Dr. Eckardt for your wisdom, your kindness and your huge heart. Rest gently until we see you again.

I have just come to know of the passing of this incredible man, Dr. Eckardt. My husband, Clayton, had bone cancer, and was his patient, having two big surgeries by him for related issues. My husband had been Air Force, flew countless missions, and they were kindred souls, alike in energy and spirit and commitment. They were like brothers. He helped my husband through many difficult situations, and the brotherhood was palpable. At the end, Dr. Eckhardt was there, in the most heroic, compassionate way possible.
A true blessing. A hero, a humble servant, may. God´s grace hold you eternally, our dear friend.

However these things happen his name crossed my mind just now. In 1993 my 25 yo girlfriend developed a rare cancer in her spinal cord/vertebral body. After much delay locally I spoke with him and he immediately said "Get her down here carefully asap and don't worry about the money." (Medicare issues) A great man in my eyes forever. (We ended up in an elevator together with a visiting foreign surgeon, I was sporting a mohawk in solidarity with my gf and he told the visitor they were experimenting with a chemo that you only lost hair on the sides of your head...funny guy.) Godspeed friend.

In 2004 my 5 year old daughter was diagnosed with Ewings Sarcoma of her left radius. I was a 23 years old not knowing anything about cancer, or what to expect! My baby went through chemo and radiation and the we were told we would need to amputate her left arm due to the malignancy. Like any young mom I was scared and was referred to Dr. Eckardt for a consultation. Before he could even say anything I was already crying, The day of the surgery came, and I prayed over my daughter and Dr.Eckardt joined me in prayer, something I never expected. Hours later passed when he came out to speak to me and told me he did not need to amputate. Thanks to him my daughters arm was saved with his amazing limb salvage surgery. My daughter gave Dr. Eckardt a book about an inventor because my 5 yr.old called him the best inventor ever. I wish I could thank him for giving my baby girl the best chance for a longer life. My daughter is now 23 and thriving! You will be missed and loved by many of your patients and family, thank you for your amazing contribution to cancer patients! With love From Nelida Tapia´s Mom.

I am reaching out in regard to a great doctor who once worked tirelessly at UCLA. I am talking about Dr. Jefferey Eckhardt.
About 23 years ago he treated my dad, who at the time had an unknown bone cancer. When I was about 6 years old my dad went in for treatment with advanced bone cancer and a very slim possibility of survival.
My father Jose Alatorre is now 55 years old. He is in very good health, walks without assistance, runs, and has worked a physical job running his own construction business all of these years. I wanted to share my dad´s story with you because my two brothers and I never got the chance to meet Dr. Eckhardt and thank him for the work he did that allowed us to enjoy our father all of these years. We want to honor his work, innovative thinking, and memory.

Without my dad, I am positive my life would look so different. I am currently an English high school teacher. I recently graduated in San Diego with a Masters of Education degree. My brother Jacob (25) graduated with a degree in kinesiology, and my youngest brother David (23), who at the time my mom was expecting, is about to finish his Civil Engineering program at San Jose State University. My family is forever grateful to UCLA and Dr. Eckhardt.

Dr. Eckardt, I miss how much you cared for my family & myself (since 1981!), your incredible sense of humor (you begged me not to pick this house on House Hunters lol, (I still have the text on my phone!), your gracefulness, your extreme kindness & most of all still getting to see you while making me feel like a VIP lol. Dr. Eckardt you had been in my life for almost 40 years (I was looking forward to my celebration cake last May!) Hope you have a squirt gun in heaven. You will always be one of the most special ones to me, I miss you dearly....

I was just thinking once again about Dr. Eckardt and remembering how disappointed for myself when he told me he was retiring and how happy I was for him because I knew how hard he had always worked. I was hoping he was having a great retirement, but then I suddenly worried about him and looked him up only to find this obituary. He was the most wonderful doctor--not just because he saved my foot, but because he really cared about his patients and was such a down-to-earth person all the while being a phenomenal surgeon. My heartfelt condolences to his family. He was really one of a kind.

Dr. Eckardt saved my leg when no one else would dare touch my case. I will always remember being in the casting room and watching all of his patients hug him as he made his rounds. He clearly helped and was loved by so many people, including myself. Thank you, Dr. Eckardt! May you rest in peace. My sincere condolences to his wife and family.

Dr. Eckardt saved my life and my leg in 1985. He treated my like a daughter. I will always carry with me the compassion and care he showed to me. I last saw him in 2015, he was not seeing patients anymore, but he took time out of his day to come down to the clinic and visit with me. He will be dearly missed and thank you to his family for sharing such an incredibly compassionate man. RIP Dr E you will be missed.

I worked for Jeff as his administrative assistant for over ten years and can attest to his excellent professionalism, dedication and compassion for patients. It was a pleasure to work for him because his thoughtfulness and caring made my job not only easier but extremely rewarding. I cannot find adequate words to express my admiration and appreciation for him as a person and as a physician. My deepest sympathies to his family. He was a remarkable man.
