Robert Sather Obituary

Robert Bob Dale Sather passed away on June 16, 2020, after a long battle with prostate cancer. He was surrounded by family members at his home when he took his final flight to heaven. Bob was born in Eau Claire, Wisconsin on January 11, 1934, the 2nd child of Oscar and Florence (Hanson) Sather. He married Ruth Krostag on June 12, 1962. Bob and Ruth recently celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary.
Bob earned a bachelor of science in math from UW - Eau Claire and a Master's Degree in Counseling from UW - Stout. He taught math for five years (1959-1964) in the Eau Claire School District. His professional career took another path when he became Director of Financial Aid at UW - Stout for two years. He then served 32 years as the Director of Financial Aid at UW - Eau Claire, helping many students achieve their goal of earning a college degree. After his retirement from the university, his tenacious spirit took him in a new direction. He became a founding member of Ace Ethanol in Stanley, Wisconsin. He served as the Director of Government Relations for 17 years.
During his lifetime, Bob was a leader and served on committees and boards at the national, state, and local levels. His most notable commitment to the community was his 14 years of service on the Eau Claire County Board of Supervisors where he accepted the responsibility to chair many committees. He was a member of the Chippewa Valley Airport Commission for 8 years. Bob was a member of Spirit Lutheran Church and a strong leader in the community.
Bob was active and loved adventure. He found it in many ways. He was a private pilot and loved motorcycling, boating, and golfing. For over 40 years, Bob flew across the country in his Beechcraft Bonanza and logged thousands of miles as a private pilot. He was passionate about discussing and debating politics, traveling, and spending time with family. Bob and Ruth enjoyed spending the winter months in Ft. Myers, Florida.
Bob is survived by his wife of 58 years, Ruth; only daughter, Tya (Sather) Shomion of Rice Lake; son-in-law, Michael Shomion of Rice Lake; granddaughters: Lindsay Shomion and Lauren Shomion of Rice Lake. He is further survived by his siblings: Nancy (Sather) Badger of Chetek, Peter and Bonnie Sather of Eau Claire, and Jerry and Martha Sather of Hernando, Florida. He also leaves behind various brother and sister-in-laws, cousins, nieces, and nephews. Bob was preceded in death by his parents Oscar and Florence Sather.
A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, August 2, 2020 at Stokes, Prock, and Mundt Funeral Chapel, Altoona from 11:30 am to 2:30 p.m. with a service of remembrance at 12:30 led by Pastor Jim Ahlquist.

Something made me think of Bob recently and I decided to look him up on the Internet. I was so sorry to see that he is no longer with us, and surprised that he was a year older than my brother (who was 87). I first met him at UW-Eau Claire when I was a student in desperate need of financial assistance. I'm sure I was panicky and felt nothing could be done to help me, but Bob was calm and reassured me. He got me through all four years of college on financial aid and work study, and for that I am so grateful. I met Bob again when I worked at Dane County Regional Planning Commission and he served on the West Central RPC. He and other RPC members came to Madison for a meeting that was held at the Dane County RPC. I could hardly believe my eyes when he walked down the hall to our office. I had to tell him who I was and how I knew him, but he was very gracious and said he remembered me. That's how kind he was. My sincerest sympathy to his family and close friends.

Deepest condolences go out to Ruth, Tya and the Sather family. Bob was a beloved mentor who taught me how to fly, steered me in the right direction when I became lost in life and enabled me to become a loving father, caring husband and USAF veteran. Bob was quick to laugh, slow to judge and enjoyed living life to the fullest. I am truly blessed to have had the chance to know Bob. He will be missed dearly and never forgotten.

My heartfelt condolences to Ruth, Tya and their family on Bob's passing. I have very fond memories of Bob in Florida. Bob was one of the nicest people I know, always upbeat, positive and with a smile on his face. He had very impressive personal and professional achievements and cared deeply about his family and the communities that he was involved in. Bob will be greatly missed.

My heartfelt condolences to Bob's family on his passing. He was a dear friend for more than 50 years and I will miss him dearly. I very much enjoyed the many times I visited Bob, Ruth and Tya at their home where they always made me welcome. Bob and I took a trip to Tanzania in 1972 to visit my birthplace and I will always treasure the memories of our good times there.

My condolences to Bob's family. Bob was involved in Civil Air Patrol when I was a cadet in 1977 78. I rode with him one day in his Bonanza to Sheboygan and back with another gentleman and a cadet. He helped inspire me. I eventually learned to fly 20 years later and even ran into him at the Eau Claire county airport. So sorry to hear of his passing.

I knew right away, reading Mr. Sather's name, I'd had him as a teacher at Central Junior High. However, I was wrong, as his obituary indicates he was at North. I believe he and my Dad, Clarence Imislund, were friends at North. I'm sorry for his passing.

My condolences to Bob's family and friends. I had the pleasure of getting to know Bob through the ethanol industry. He was a tireless advocate for the industry. Bob was also a kind and thoughtful man. He will be missed by many.

So sorry to hear about Mr. Sathers death. Great guy, he help me a lot at North Senior High, and to gain entrance at the UWEC after my military service. Another loss for the greatest generation!
