I have known COL Thornton for about 14 years, while he served as Treasurer and director of the Military Officers Association of America, Ft. Benning Area Chapter. Joe was very reliable. He not only served as Treasurer but he also assisted in recruiting and various other tasks as he continued serving our nation and fellow soldiers.

To the Thornton Family,
My sincerest condolences to you at that time of great lose. I'd like you to know that Joe was central to my maturation as an Army officer and I'm still benefiting from his mentorship and wisdom. He was an officer and a fine gentleman.

Dear Thornton family. I am so very sorry for your loss. Joe was one of a kind, and loved each of you dearly. So many thoughts and prayers are going out to you at this time. I always enjoyed the many years I worked with Joe at Martin Army Hospital - first as him my boss and much later me as his boss - it was a hoot.

It was a blessing to have work for him. He and I always joked that he hired me when I was 14 because I was the youngest among his employees. He always made you laugh! I pray for God's peace for his family. He will be missed.
