ROGER HAUN Obituary

HAUN, Roger William "Bill," 92, passed away February 11, 2012 in Richmond, Va. Born in Bradley County, Tennessee, January 23, 1920, he was the son of the late Clarence H. Haun and Ella "Dolly" Crox Haun. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Elizabeth Haun Lingerfelt; and his wife of 69 years, Marjorie Neal Ray Haun. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Charles Roger and Sarah Pate Haun, of Glen Allen, Va.; three grandsons, Roger William Haun II (Heidi), of Macon, Ga., Fieldon David Haun (Brittany), of Lexington Park, Md., and John Philip Haun of Glen Allen, Va.; one great-grandson, Roger William "Trey" Haun III of Macon, Ga.; his brother and sister-in-law, Thomas R. "Tommy" and Betty Haun, of Sweetwater, Tenn., who were not only family but also his closest friends; his sister, Virginia Haun of Sweetwater, Tenn.; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Beverly and Charles Bales, of Powell, Tenn.; and numerous nephews and nieces, including Pat Haun Ingram of Lexington, Ky., who was like a daughter to him. A member of the Greatest Generation, Bill served in World War II as a tank commander in the Sixth Armored Division, participating in the Normandy campaign and the Battle of the Bulge during which he was awarded the Bronze Star and the Silver Star for valor. For many years, he was in the grocery business as manager of the Paul Red Food Store in Sweetwater, Tenn. During that time, he gave many young men their first job and served as a mentor to them. He loved to farm and, after the grocery was destroyed in a fire, he farmed full-time raising beef cattle and operating an egg business. A member of First Baptist Church, Sweetwater, since the 1930s, he served many years as a deacon and secretary of his Sunday School class. Visitation will be held at Bliley's - Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave., from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday. The body will be transferred to Sweetwater, Tennessee for burial. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention, Box 6767, Richmond, Va. 23230 or to First Baptist Church, Sweetwater, Tenn.
