Sarah, your pictures captured the souls of those you photographed and touched the souls of those who viewed them -- just as your life touched the souls of everyone privileged to have met you. The memory of your warm smile will remain with me forever. May your family find peace and comfort in their memories of you.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

MRS Underhill,
Carol and I wish to express our deepest sympathy in your loss of Sarah. I had the distinct and pleasure of working with Sarah while serving as the Commander at Soldier System Center. Words can never express how much life she brought to soldiers through her great talent as a photographer. We will deeply miss her but always will remember her through her pictures.

I want to extend to you in this time of grief my heart-felt love and thoughts as you try to make sense of this tragic loss. I am a photographer aquaintance of Sarah's from way back when I was living in Boston. She touched my life profoundly with her great sense of joy, humor and kindness. Though Sarah's life was cut short, please know that her spirit will live on in her photographs and the hearts and minds of many. My thoughts and prayers are with you now and in the weeks and months to come.

I am truly saddened to hear about Sarah passing. I first met sarah when she transferred to Natick and I was the Detachment Sergeant at Natick. She was a god send to Natick and there was not anything that I asked Sarah that she wasn't willing to do for my Soldiers. I am still shocked to hear about her passing. She will forever be in my prayers. Just two months ago, I saw someone that I knew while TDY from Natick and asked them to tell Sarah that I said hi and I will see her in Jul.

Dear Mrs. Underhill and Jonathan,
I am sorry and saddened to learn of Sarah's passing. We were lucky growing up on West Bacon Street in Plainville at a time when kids could be kids, without some of the problems kids have to deal with today. I remember the adventures Sarah and I had as kids. From making mud pies to putting on shows for the neighborhhood, from bike rides to walking downtown to Falk's Market for penny candy, there would always be a story to talk about later. We would spend hours playing Yahtzee, playing cards, or just hanging out. We went to our first concert together, Aerosmith in 1974 and had a blast. I remember when Sarah got her horse, Eliza Doolittle, she was so excited. There are so many good memories!
After we graduated from High School , I saw Sarah seldomly, but thought of her often. After viewing her photos, I have seen yet another side of her. She had a good eye and it shows in her work. It seems that Sarah had a rich and fulfilling life traveling, doing work that she loved. What more could a person hope for.
I am certain that Sarah touched many lives and that she will be missed by many, however, she will never be forgotten.
Please feel free to contact me if you please. Again, my deepest sympathies.
Leslie A. (Swallow) Peck, a childhood friend and neighbor of Sarah.

God bless you Sarah and your family. You'll be missed by those closest to you but also by those you helped that never knew your name. As most of us know, Sarah took countless trips overseas and always concerned herself with the children of the countries she visited. My fondest memory of Sarah will always be of the "whale" handled toothbrushes she packed in her suitcase to distribute to the children of those mostly underprivileged countries and I can only pray that I too can give back to this world as she did.
"How will I laugh tommorow when I can't even smile today".....You'll be missed.

I am so deeply saddened by the loss of Sarah. Not only was she an incredibly talented photographer, but she was such a joy to work with too. Her enthusisam for her talent, the Army, and capturing lasting memories of our Soldiers will forever be in my heart when I think of her. She was gracious, kind, helpful and always professional. She always wanted to travel to get those true "Soldier shots" and whenever I'd ask for a particular picture and she didn't have it, she'd say, "I'd be happy to travel and get that for you!" She was always eager to do the most she could to get those great shots -- wherever and whenever she was needed. We have used countless "Sarah pictures," as we call them, in presentations, videos and many of them adorn our walls here at our office building in Virginia. Attached is one of my favories from when we sent Sarah to McAlester, Okla. to visit our ammunition plant. She loved every minute of the trip. There aren't too many people who would love to take pictures of bombs, but Sarah knew the stories behind those people and she captured them perfectly. This picture is in our building lobby and I'll never look at it the same. We'll miss you Sarah, very much.

To Mrs. Underhill,
I met Sarah while working here at Natick but got to really know her during our many fun times together at concerts and on vacation. I will cherish her friendship forever. Whenever I think back to the funny vacation moments, she’s always part of the story. Her curiosity for people and off-the-beaten-path places always let to adventures. She knew how to lighten up any situation. Sarah will never be forgotten. And, she will forever be one of the “Miami 5.”

To the family and friends of Sarah Underhill. I had the distinct pleasure of meeting Sarah here at the Natick soldier center shortly after I started in 1996. She was one of the most vibrant and friendly people here at Natick. We became friends almost instantly which I think was the case with the majority of people she interacted with. She always had a kind word and was eager to help out both with work projects and personally. She will be sorely missed both by myself and everyone who knew her.

Dear Mrs. Underhill,
I am SO SORRY for your loss. I worked with Sarah at Hanscom for eight years and she was such a pleasure to work with and know as a friend. She and I took a class together in Boston learning the old technique of colorizing B&W photos with oils. Sarah left Hanscom two years before I and there was truly a void there that lasted with me until I left to retire two years later. People come and go during our working lives some remain with us always, Sarah is one of those people who you never forget...she was a dedicated pro and took time to enjoy life, skiing in the winter, enjoying the summer sun and being with her many friends. She has left a legacy in her work and in her spirit that will always remain. God bless...

My sincere condolences to the Underhill family. I had the distinct pleasure to work with Sarah over the years both at Natick and on travel. I will remember Sarah’s smile, her sparkling personality, her passion for her work and her fun loving nature. I always enjoyed visiting Sarah in her studio and checking out her wall of photos. She was truly a brilliant photographer. I will miss Sarah deeply and always remember her fondly.

My wife and I feel like we have lost a family member because Sarah was such an integral part of our lives for the past 12 years. Her quick smile, gentle manner, friendship and passion for photography made her so special. There was not a major event in our lives in the military that she did not provide the photographic support. It was always perfect! Her eye with the camera was such a gift. And she always provided a few special touches to personalize the photos before she gave them to us. Her generosity, love and friendship gave us so much joy. She will be sorely missed. We are thankful that God let her be a part of our lives and look forward to seeing her again in Heaven some day. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family for their loss. You can be so proud of your remarkable daughter!

Mrs. Underhill,
I've been an engineer at Natick Soldier Center for the last five years. During that time, I saw a lot of Sarah's photographs and, as a photographer myself, was extraordinarily impressed with her work, particularly the compassion foro people that it reveals. Last October, I had the honor to finally meet her, in Yuma, Arizona, where we were both photographing a major Army event for a week. We had a wonderful time working together, sharing thoughts about photography, and we learned that we had both served at Hanscom AFB at the same time, though we hadn't met then. Your daughter was a very special person and will be missed by all who served with her. May you in time be comforted, and always remember this fine lady who touched so many people with blessing.

Mrs. Underhill and Jonathan,
Though many years have passed; since, as Kathy Kelly reminisced, the sleepover/pajama party at the "big yellow house on the corner/hill; I send my love to you both. I am so sorry for your sadness at losing Sarah. I am also sorry that I never had the joy and wonder to have seen or talked with her since she had grown into a woman and adult person.
I tell you seriously with even greater sorrow that Sarah had been on my heart very heavy to find and get a hold of her and am sure I spoke with my sister Jodi who does Jon's hair about trying to get a contact number.
We do not know what tomorrow holds but can be sure God does. I wish I had of listened a little better.
I will be sure to look at her work where I will see and feel a little more about your Sarah.
Please feel free to call or mail if you wish to talk as time passes.
Prayerfully with love, kristi grant of Broad Street, Plainville

To Mrs. Underhill - I extend my deepest, most heartfelt sympathy and condolences to you and Jonathan. Although I did not know Sarah in adulthood, I have vivid and wonderful memories of magical moments from my childhood friendship with Sarah. Sleepovers at the Underhill's for me was like going to summer camp...so much fun and laughter was shared with Sarah. She was always smiling and happy. I vividly remember the Big Yellow House on E. Bacon Street and Sarah' very cool bedroom...filled with photos, art and treasures. I am so happy she had such a full and colorful life. If she touched me so deeply as a child, no doubt she touched everyone she ever met. I feel blessed to have had her as a friend. - A big heartfelt hug for a huge loss! To The Underhill Family:
Please accept my deepest sympathies on Sarah’s passing. Please know that your family will be in my families’ prayers.
I met Sarah 2 years ago when my family and I moved to Massachusetts from Maryland. On my first day here she took a photo of me for my job. She made it an effort to make me feel very welcomed. That photo still draws a smile from me when I pass by it.
She was a warm caring person that never spoke an unkind word to any Soldier. She cared greatly for every Soldier she ever met. The photo’s that she took showed how much she cared. It takes a rare person with her heart to take a picture and capture that rare essence.
Today as I walked around Natick Labs. I was reminded again and again of all the contributions that Sarah has made here. I know that many of the buildings here have one or more of Sarah’s photo’s hanging in them. In my building her photo’s are of the Soldier’s that she spoke with, laughed with and cared about. No words can ever express my heart filled loss for your family. Please know that she will be remembered thru her photo’s that were a window to her kind soul.

I met Sarah through my dad as they work together. Sarah photographed my wedding and was so personable that I felt like my friend was taking pictures of my special day instead of just someone I met.
Its funny, when I look at my wedding pictures, my first thought is always of Sarah and how grateful I am to have found someone so talented to capture our memories. Only then do I reflect on such a great day. Now, not a day won't go by that I won't remember Sarah's smile and say a prayer for her family. I was so sadden to hear of Sarah's passing. She lit up a room! She was engaging, thoughtful, energetic, warm and honest person who exuded life itself. She was a delightful mix of rich, vibrant colors, brilliant hues and deep shades. Her photos captured and reflected the complex essence of herself - - beautiful, meaningful, perplexing, joyful, serious, and, often, in stark contrast to the surroundings. She easily captured life’s triumphant and tragic times - - depicting life as it was and life as she saw it. As an artist, she saw what others tend to miss. And through her photos, she opened a world of understanding to her audience.
When I think of Sarah, I will think of colors.
And, dear Sarah, when I think of colors, I will think of you.
A fiery spirit and brilliant smile all wrapped up in a rainbow’s hues.
You will be sorely missed by so very many people. And you will be remembered too! I am so very glad that you entered my life - - I am richer for it.

Even though Sarah and I never met in person I couldn't call our friendship 'virtual' 'cos she did me several really meaningful small kindnesses that involved the material realm.
I was hoping she would come down under soon and we could share a beer or two and I could show her some of my beloved country, parts that many less compassionate people would not understand, but I know Sarah would.
I lost another very dear friend suddenly on the 24th Feb and he was a very famous actor and musician, so I know he will be looking for another 'official photographer' in heaven.
I would love Sarah to have my old job photographing Alan Dargin, I know they will get along! I can imagine them bantering happily with one another, no longer feeling any of the pain of our life on earth and just dazzling the heavenly hosts with their creative partnership.
This is how I will think of them both and while we grieve their loss I know that they are enjoying the peace that they deserve.
My most sincere and heartfelt condolences to Sarah's family I am so very sorry for your loss.
Deepest Sympathies

To the Family and Friends of Sarah E. Underhill:
I want to extend to you in this time of extraordinary loss, my family's heart-felt love and thoughts as you try to make sense of this sudden tragedy. I am a photographer and I was honored to have met Sarah through an online community of international photographers. We "spoke" a few times through the community and I was always touched by Sarah's great humor, generosity, kindness and humility. She was also remarkably passionate and dedicated to both her craft and to the men and women of whom she dedicated her life's work. It is a rare quality that someone so talented and committed is also so humble and giving to others, particularly others she barely knew. It is a measure of her swelling heart and her extraordinary love for the living that there are now so many who embrace you in your time of grief.
Though Sarah's life was much too short, please rejoice in knowing that her life was in fact luminous and touch, like nourishing rivers of light, many. Her work and her voice will live on and at least this must be a small commiseration. Her work, her life and her voice will long outlast the dark, pneumbra'd sadness that is cast down now.
Please know that your daughter touched our lives deeply and lives of so many and I know of no other way to honor someone than to speak only this:
Sarah Underhill was a gift to all and though her life may have passed too quickly that which she gave all of us shall not rest but surive as a beacon amid the shadow'd lands.
Our family's prayers arel with you this evening and for the remainder of your days of sorrow and rest.
Respectfully
Bob, Marina and Dima Black

I am so saddened to hear of Sara's death. I had the pleasure and honor of working alongside such a professional and world-renowned photographer. I will miss her cheerful and always willing to help out personality. PATCAD will not be the same and I now the NATICK family will miss her dearly and are hurting deeply.
My deepest and heartfelt condolences to her mother and entire family. I am confident, she now rests in the precious and safe arms of our dear, Lord Jesus Christ.

I was honored to work with Sarah for just a few months, to support numerous VIPs visiting us at the Army Natick Soldier Systems Center. I will always remember her very fondly for her terrific spirit and great sense of humor, and her sharp skills in her field. My condolences to Sarah's family and friends, and my very best wishes to Sarah's beautiful spirit.
