Rick Bordas

BORDAS, RICK, had a change of address. On September 18, 2013, he joyfully moved to his new home in heaven. Since believing in Jesus as his Lord and Savior 25 years ago, he has longed for the day when he would see him face to face. That day has come! Rick excelled at having a right perspective on the things of this world. He recently told a young man he mentored that the most important things in life are God, family and friends. He had no regrets that he didn't make more money or work harder at his career.

Most of Rick's life was invested in important things like loving his family, building relationships, studying God's Word, mentoring young men, coaching basketball, playing golf every now and then and dancing almost every evening.

Rick never met a stranger, and he was never at a loss for words. He worked a room with skill and ease. He would tell you it is better to be interested than interesting, but often said that he couldn't help it if he had better stories than everyone else! Rick and his wife Lori just celebrated their 30th anniversary. No one thought it would last, seriously, no one, but God had other plans. He took two self-absorbed people who thought they deserved to be happy and showed them the way to true happiness is in Christ alone.

Rick was the proud father of three sons and one stepson. According to him, they are the smartest, best looking and funniest kids in the entire world. They have, however, in recent years been replaced by the smartest, best looking and funniest grandchildren in the entire world.

Rick was the second in a family of nine children. Many of his fondest memories of growing up in West Virginia include the hilarious times he had with his siblings and parents.

A member of Southeast Christian Church, Rick considered it a privilege to serve as a deacon, greeter and D group leader for a dozen young men through their high school, college and early married years. This group was a blessing until Rick's last day on earth.

As a veteran of the Vietnam War, Rick loved this country. It never ceased to amaze him how many people take for granted the precious freedom we enjoy in America. Years ago, he gave up watching nightly news programs for wholesome entertainment such as Kentucky Basketball and Duck Dynasty.

Rick loved The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and served on the Foundation Board for the last seven years. Once he caught the vision for the work, he told anyone who would listen how well they equip young men and women to take the Gospel to the ends of the earth.

Rick was surprised and honored in June when The Rick Bordas Fund for Student Discipleship was established at the Seminary-yet another example of what God can do with one surrendered life. This fund will be used to pour into the lives of seminary students as they answer God's call to serve Him in ministry.

The family requests in lieu of flowers that donations be made to The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, 2825 Lexington Road, Louisville, KY, 40206.

After all, "The grass withers and the flowers fade but the Word of the Lord endures forever" (Isaiah 40:8).

He is preceded in death by his sweet brother, Joe.

Rick is survived by his wife, Lori; three sons, and their wives, Drew and Kennington, Matt and Karen, Josh and Jessica; and one stepson, and his #1 fan, Jeffrey Peterson; six grand kids, Anna, Lauren, Ryan, Andrew, Ben and Sadie and one on the way; his parents, Jim and Margaret Anne Bordas; and seven siblings, Jimmy, Mike, John, Mark, Suellen, Tom and Aimee and too many nieces and nephews to list.

Visitation will be held Sunday, September 22, 2013 from 1-6 p.m. at Rattermans Funeral Home in Middletown. Funeral services at Southeast Christian Church on Monday the 23rd at 9 a.m.
