Katharine Ridge Obituary

Ridge, Katharine Carlton,

was born December 31, 1946 in Louisville, the second of three daughters born to John and Chrissie Ridge. She died on October 6, 2015 after a brief illness. Carlton graduated from Holy Spirit School, Sacred Heart Academy and Mary Washington College of the University of Virginia in 1968, where she majored in art and obtained a teaching certificate. Carlton was a loving mother, artist, designer, writer and avid horsewoman. She married Dr. Keith Auerbach in 1973 and they had two sons, John Alexander Pearson Auerbach, 36, of Louisville, and Peter Quinn Auerbach, 29, of White Plains, NY. Carlton and Keith were divorced in 1999.

In 1975 she founded Sutton Hoo , a successful jewelry company whose designs were based on archeological finds and ancient jewelry from Egypt, Greece and the Roman Empire. She closed Sutton Hoo in 2000 after many achievements as celebrated in several magazines. She was voted artist of the year by Kentucky Woman. She also was known for interior design prowess and one of her three home remodels was featured in This Old House Magazine.

Carlton married Davis Marret in 2001 and he continues to be her loving friend. Carlton is survived by her two sons Alex and Peter, her sisters Raleigh Ridge of Louisville and Cedar Koons of Santa Fe, New Mexico, her nieces and nephews, Clay Porter and Betsy Darby of Louisville, Woodwyn Koons of Ojai, CA and Rowan Koons of Denver, CO. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Visitation is Friday, October 9, 2015 from 3-7 p.m. at Ratterman Funeral Home 3711 Lexington Rd. Sadness is so private, like tears on the uptown express.... And, yet, we cant begin to tell you how bright you made our lives through college and beyond, your humor, your quirkiness, your verve, your talent. These things will live with us forever. There is no time we spent together we would not spend again.

Thought I never knew Carlton (her sister and I were friends) I wore her jewelry for years, and just today a lady at the beauty shop walked in wearing one of her necklaces and we talked about them. Had no idea she had passed away, and am sorry her art is gone forever. My best to her family, Raleigh Porter and I were friends.

I'm sorry for the families loss. Carlton would come into Apple Patch usually once a month and I had an opportunity to talk to her. She was a lovely lady and I know that her children and family will truly miss her.

So sorry for your loss. I met Carlton in 1991. So blessed to have met her. I visited her many times to talk "accounting", and she always had all of her young ladies from the local high schools in there... She was a very talented and sweet lady. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. I know that she will be missed by all.
