Mary Currier Obituary

Currier, Mary Ann,

passed away peacefully at her home on November 5, 2017. A woman of boundless energy, strong determination, and a broad intellectual curiosity, she was known for her intimate yet larger-than-life still lifes and her wide influence as a teacher to decades of Louisville School of Art students. Throughout the years, much of her artwork has made its way into numerous collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, Crystal Bridges in Bentonville, AR, and the Speed Art Museum in Louisville, KY.

Born in Louisville in 1927 to German immigrants, Adolph and Gertrude Ebert, she attended Sacred Heart Academy and the Model School. As a senior in high school she won a scholarship to the Chicago Academy of Fine Art through a "Draw Me" correspondence course, and following art school, she returned to Louisville to work as a furniture illustrator for Stewarts Department Store. In 1960 she began teaching design, color, life drawing and portrait classes at the Louisville School of Art, a job she always treasured. From 1980 onward she fully dedicated her time to following her passion, her artwork.

She leaves behind her devoted husband of 68 years, Lionel Currier; loving daughters, Anne Currier (George Hrycun), Nancy Currier, and Frances Lewis (Marc); grandchildren, Emily Cohen, Katie Fitchett (Tom), Ted Lewis, and Sam Lewis (Margaret); and one great-grandchild, Sebastian Fitchett. She was a dynamic force in the lives of many and she will be greatly missed.

Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Ratterman Funeral Home, 3711 Lexington Road. Her funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Ratterman Funeral Home followed by a private family burial in Cave Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Speed Art Museum.

A celebration of her life will be held at a future date to be determined.

I will always cherish the memories of my time at LSA 67-70 and Mary Anns influence. She helped me tremendously and I still use tricks and techniques she taught me. I will never forget the beaux arts ball in anchorage and she came dressed as a nun " with child". It was obvious she loved what she was doing as a teacher. She was always wanting to help and made you feel encouraged. She told me I should enter a painting in the speed museum biennial and I did, it was accepted and exhibited. So many other things she did, I could go on and on. I will never forget. RIP

Mary was a firm but gentle instructor when I was a student at the Louisville School of Art. Always encouraging, always supportive. In later Iife I saw her on several occasions and we always enjoyed reminiscing about those days.

I'll never forget Mary Ann as a teacher and a warm human being. She helped make the Louisville School of Art a warm, exciting place.

We are so sorry for your loss. She was a wonderful neighbor and painted beautiful portraits of my sisters which are still hanging on my mom's wall today. Prayers to your family.

I greatly admired Mary Ann. I admired her work. But I admired her as a person even more. She was always kind and generous. Also smart, insightful and amazingly well read. She influenced many people who will remember her with fondness.

I had classes under her at old
Art Center School at UofL in 1961-62. She was a very encouraging teacher. Kept up with her over the years. She is for sure one of the best Kentucky artists. Our artist Community just lost a special lady. Marguerite (Marty) Rice
