Joseph Mazzone Obituary

SKOWHEGAN -- Joseph N. Mazzone, 89, of Mary Street, formerly of Billerica, Mass., died Monday, May 11, 2009, at Redington-Fairview General Hospital.

He was born in Everett, Mass., on Dec. 5, 1919, the son of Nicholas and Angelina (Guarino) Mazzone.

Joe attended Everett schools and served with the Army during World War II in the Pacific Theater. After the war, he attended the New England School of Art in Boston and graduated with honors. In 1950, he married Mary McNamara. He worked as a civil draftsman for Whitman and Howard Engineering in Boston until his retirement. They moved to Maine in 1985.

Joe was an artist who enjoyed oil painting. He also was an avid video photographer and gardener. He was a loyal Patriots fan who was one of the first season-ticket holders at Foxboro Stadium, never missing a game until he moved to Maine. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

He was predeceased by an infant son, Joseph; and a sister, Rosemarie Messuri.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Mazzone, of Skowhegan; a daughter, Joanne Morrell of Knoxville, Tenn.; two sons, Jeffrey Mazzone and his wife, Janette, and Timothy Mazzone and his wife, Cynthia, all of Billerica, Mass.; a brother, Nicholas Mazzone of Wakefield, Mass.; two sisters, Celeste Boucher of Pinellas Park, Fla., and Candida Valley of Wakefield, Mass.; six grandchildren, Charles Morrell, Misty LaVertue, Mallory Mazzone, Melissa Mazzone, Nicholas Mazzone and Jessica Mazzone; four great-grandchildren, Jacob and Joseph Morrell and Alexis and André LaVertue; and several nieces and nephews.

Visiting will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, May 18, at Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta. A graveside service with military honors will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta.
