Joan was the middle of seven children born to Lawrence and Cecilia Beattie. She grew her incredible work ethic in the potato fields of Patten, where she developed her love and commitment to family in the joys and struggles of "county" living.
After graduating from Patten Academy, Joan showed her true colors as she marched off to the U.S. Army to pay her way to Gorham State Teachers College. She was proud of her service to her country. During a rich and fulfilling 30-year career as a teacher, she touched the minds and lives of a multitude of children, parents and fellow educators in the communities of Lewiston, Sabattus and Durham.
In her journey to become a teacher she met and married her lifetime best friend and the love of her life, Vance Keene. They were blessed with three children: Jonathan, Ellen and Kelly and later 12 grandchildren.
Joan touched the lives of many with her generosity and thoughtfulness of others. She cherished a large circle of life-long friendships cemented by unconditional shared loyalty and devotion.
Joan was predeceased by her parents and sister, Verna.
She is survived by her loving husband of 48 years; her children: Jonathan Keene of Massachusetts, Ellen County of Auburn, Kelly Marston and her husband, Mike, of Oakland; grandchildren: Megan, Cole, and Abby Keene, Billy, Rose (Dumas), Albert, Tyler, Rylee and Joshua County, Nicolas Keene and Hunter Hayes, and one great-grandchild, Gabriel Dumas.
She is also survived by her sister Marie O'Meara, husband Bill of Minneapolis, Minn.; sister Lorraine (Kitty) Beattie; brother Larry (Pouch) Beattie and wife Margaret of Portland; brother Paul Beattie wife Mary of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., and brother David Beattie and wife Donna of Portland; and many nieces and nephews.
For three years, Joan displayed a remarkable determination in the face of a devastating diagnosis of terminal cancer. By living out her faith she modeled and taught those she loved valuable life lessons: be determined -- no obstacle is too large to overcome, try hard -- work harder, take less than you give, be kind to everyone, laugh every day, and love your family with every fiber of your being.
The family wishes to acknowledge the extraordinary care provided by the many angels of Androscoggin Home Health and Hospice and her doctors. In addition, the family wishes to give thanks for the countless loving deeds and prayers generously given by family and friends. Online condolences may be shared with her family at www.chandlerfunerals.com.
A celebration of Joan's life will be held at Pathway Vineyard Church in Lewiston on Wednesday, July 6, at 1:30 p.m.; a reception will follow in the foyer. A committal service will be held later that day at Highland Cemetery on Megquier Hill in West Poland at 5 p.m. The family invites family and close friends to their home Tuesday for a private visitation from 4 to 6 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations for a scholarship fund in her memory may be sent to Lisbon Federal Credit Union, P.O. Box 878, Lisbon, ME 04250.
Arrangements are under the direction of Chandler Funeral Homes and Cremation Service, 26 West Dwinal Street, Mechanic Falls.

Joan,s mother and my mother were the best of friends in Patten for many years.
Reading the messages sent from her many friends, and family members I can tell she was certainly a tribute to her mother. She obviously touched many lives in wonderful ways. Her sister ,Marie,
and I were in the same class in Patten, but over the years unfortunately we have drifted apart. Her family will be in our prayers. Richard Nevers

When I first started teaching in Durham, Joan was one of my two mentors. She was a nice lady who always gave me really thoughtful advice, and though I have lost touch with many of my Durham friends, I heard the news today, and was saddened by it. Condolences to your family.

Vance, Jonathan, Ellen, and Kelly -
I heard the sad news today from Dad, and I am very sorry for your loss. Even as young as I was I can remember Joan's laugh and smile during school or girl scout events, and I will hold those memories closer now. Memories are a wonderful thing as they sustain us in times of sorrow and hardship and I am thankful that you have sooo many wonderful ones. God Bless you and keep you strong at heart.
With sympathy and Love

Well this day has brought me back to the 60's. Mrs. Keene was one of my Elementary teachers at Sabattus. She was a good teacher, one memory I have is Mr Dupal & Mrs Keene were riding together home during a blizzard and couldn't make it through the unplowed road on Rte.9 and stopped at my house until the roads were plowed, I thought that was pretty cool to have my teachers stuck at my house, enjoyed them while they were there.
Thought about her over the years but didn't know where she was living.
My Prayers, Condolences & Sympathy to the family

Ginny and I are saddened by the loss of Joan. You, Joan and your kids are special people to us and always will be. When we first came to Maine, as young dreamers looking for a way of life, you were among the first people who opened your hearts and homes to us. Vance, you provided me with the opportunity to begin a lifelong career as a teacher and a coach in Lisbon. You and Joan together exposed us to a circle of friends that endures to this day. We have nothing but happy memories of social gatherings and family outings at your duplex on 196. Ginny and I will never forget meeting you and Joan in your kitchen in the summer of 1970. Joan impressed us then with her openness, her genuine approach to life, and her great sense of humor. We will never forget her infectious laugh and her love for her family. Joan loved being a mom and a teacher. I am absolutely sure she loved being a grandparent. She helped build a great family that will endure well beyond her time on earth.
With sympathy and love,
John & Ginny Murphy

Joan you had no fear! You lived life to it's fullest! My favorite memory of you was at your retirement party. In true Joan fashion, you made a comment TO EVERYONE about our, not hard on the eyes, vice principal's bottom! You never minced words and we loved that about you! God Bless!
