Angus McDuffie Obituary

Angus James McDuffie, 44
GRAY - Angus James McDuffie, 44, of Gray, died Monday, Jan. 2, 2017, in a tragic snowmobile accident, while riding on a most beautiful winter morning with his son, Owen, and two of their friends.
Angus was born on Sept. 25, 1972, in Brunswick, to Stephen and Christine Doten McDuffie. He grew up in Portland and graduated from Deering High School, where he was a valued member of the football and wrestling teams, and where he even wrote an article or two for the school newspaper. He spent summers at the family cottage on Long Island in Casco Bay. Some of his fondest memories were made while he worked, from the time he was 10 through his college years, as a helper and sternman for Long Island lobstermen Donnie MacVane and Steve Train.
He was an avid outdoorsman from an early age, hunting birds, ducks, deer and moose in Maine and in Canada, fishing in fresh and salt water, canoeing, power boating, wilderness camping, and of course, snowmobiling with friends and family. He was an active participant in the St. Albans Hunting Camp.
Angus earned an engineering degree from the University of Maine in Orono, where he made lifelong friends among his fellow Woodsmen's Team members. After college, he worked as an engineer before joining his father in the family business, Pine State Elevator Company, which he owned with his brother Travis.
On Aug. 11, 2000, he married his high school sweetheart, Darcie Brooke McCracken, on Fowler's Beach on Long Island, and (typical of their shared adventurous spirit) honeymooned in Churchill, Manitoba, to witness polar bears on their home ice. They produced two wonderful children, 13-year-old Owen, and 11-year-old Una. Angus was a proud and very involved father, always including his children in all of his activities and supporting them in theirs.
Angus coached wrestling for over 10 years in the Portland middle schools, and has mentored his son in that sport. He currently was president of the Gray/New Gloucester Patriot Lacrosse Club and an enthusiastic supporter of the Cumberland County 4-H Sheep Club, as well as anything else his children were involved in. He also was a member of the Gray Lions Club and Ducks Unlimited.
Angus leaves his wife, Darcie McDuffie, and children, Owen and Una; his parents, Steve and Chris McDuffie; his brother, Travis McDuffie and wife, Beth, and their children Ezra, Clara and Samuel McDuffie; niece Mattie Willis; nephews Esteban, Marcos and Joaquin Ezcurras; his foster brother, Dick Lucey; and many, many friends and colleagues, as well as his Chesapeake retriever, Moose.
Visitation will take place from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 6, 2017, at
A.T. Hutchins Funeral Home,
660 Brighton Ave., Portland. A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 7, 2017, at A.T. Hutchins Funeral Home. A reception will follow the funeral service. To share a memory or condolence, please visit: www.athutchins.com.

Steve and Chris,
I am so sorry for your loss. Angus was a wonderful young man. He will be missed very much by all of us. I enjoyed very much watching him grow up over the years at hunting camp. January 5, 2017

To the McDuffie Family,
We know that God takes the best.
Darcie, you will remember the good times and the wonderful experiences you have had. Angus was a wonderful Father. He taught Owen a lot about most everything in general, hunting, fishing and life.
I'll never forget the time at St. Albans Mountain Hunting Camp when Angus was just a boy, the look on his face when we showed him the rack of the buck he had shot after we had boiled it down on the stove. We had taken a smaller rack in place of his good size one and he was shocked that his shrunk. It was really funny. Kids learn about hunting camps at a very young age.
We are all very sorry Darcie for your loss. I know Steve and Chris will be a big help with your family. They are great Folks.
God bless all you folks From all the Boys and Girls from St.Albans Hunting Camp.

Dear Chris and Steve,

I recall Angus as a beautiful infant nestled in Chris's arms on the porch of your Long Island home. It was a lovely sight I shall always remember. Other images appear-a joyous, lively young
boy, a kind, charming young man. My heart goes out to you at this very sad time.
Much Love,

When I spoke to my father recently, he asked me if I remembered Angus McDuffie. He told me that Angus wrestled for him in high school. Unfortunately, I did not have the pleasure of meeting Angus. However, I have listened to my father speak highly of him. After reading his obituary, it seems they have a great deal in common, especially the Chesapeake Bay Retriever!! May the wonderful memories you have be of comfort to you during your time of loss.

God Bless,

January 4, 2017

Dear Chris and Steve,

My first memory of Angus is when he was 5 and I was 18, the first time we drove up from NJ and visited you on Long Island. There he was, this beautiful, fair, tiny child catching Lobsters in traps! A site so alien and so wonderful to my urban eyes. What joy there was in him, but that's not really surprising considering how wonderful his parents are. Please know that our hearts and prayers are with you, now and in the future.

With deep sympathy,
Lori and Bob Winsor

On behalf of everyone here at United Drilling I'd like to take a moment to express our most sincere condolences. We have been blessed and honored to have had the privilege to work for Angus; he is dedicated, loyal & hard working. His personality is without comparison; he can always put a smile on your face with conversation or even with an email. My heart grieves the loss of an amazing man, incredible father, and unconditional friend. The world was a better place because of Angus; saying he will be missed is an understatement. Our prayers are with his family and friends.

January 4, 2017

Angus and Darcie were among our first friends in Maine - we met at the Mercy Hospital childbirth class (and prenatal yoga) and had our boys days apart. They were accommodating enough to also have a girl, about 6 months after we did. My husband died when the kids were 6 mos and 2 years old, and Angus and Darcie were rocks for me and the kids, and our love for them is unconditional. We feel this loss deeply, and send unending love and support to Darcie, Owen, Una, and all the McDuffies and McCrackens.

January 4, 2017

Angus was a valued associate and was well known as one of the good guys in this business. I have never known of or heard a cross word about him. He was an honest businessman and a pleasure to work with. He will be sorely missed.

Our sincere condolences go out to his coworkers, his friends and especially his family.

January 4, 2017

I am so sad and shocked to hear this terrible news! My deepest condolences to Darcy and kids, and Angus's whole family! I am grateful to have called Angus my friend and many memories of him bring a smile to my face. Some of my favorite memories are from having Angus join my family for Midnight Christmas mass at St Joseph's church, him trying to teach Catherine and I how to drive our Freshman year - and almost driving through Macy's, beach trips in his dad's convertible... He will be sadly missed by me and the whole Bailey family!

Dear Angus.
As I sit writing this message to you and your family my heart is broken. I have known you and Travis for so many years. You are truly one of the nicest men I have been involved with thru my whole career. It has been a joy and a privilege to know you know and forever. As you go to god he will greet you with open arms and care and love you throughout eternity.
All my blessings to you and your family.
