Frances Carvel Obituary

Frances Carvel, 84
PORTLAND -- Frances Carvel, 84, of Portland, passed away on Nov. 19, 2013, at Seaside Nursing Home.
Frances was born in Lawrence, Mass., on July 13, 1929, the daughter of Israel (Fred) and Anne Steinberg. She attended Simmons College in Boston before moving to Portland to marry Richard Carvel on Feb. 25, 1950. After raising two children, Frances completed her bachelor's degree at Gorham State Teacher's College (now USM) in 1969 and worked as a substitute teacher. While her husband ran The Carvel Co., a family business, she took over the management of Fred's Barbecue, her parents' grocery store in Old Orchard Beach.
She and her husband loved to travel and, following their retirement, they spent most of the year in Jupiter, Fla., and the Bahamas, returning to Maine each summer. She was an avid reader and expert card shark, playing Tournament Bridge until the end of her life. As she described herself, Frances was a little person with a big attitude.
Frances is survived by her husband Richard, a resident of the Maine Veteran's Home in Scarborough; her son Steven Carvel and his wife Shelley of Portland, her daughter Cynthia Carroll of Portland; her grandchildren ,Amy Carvel of Portland, David Carvel of San Antonio, Texas, and Heather Carroll of Old Orchard Beach; and her great-grandchildren, Nathaniel and Skylar Carroll. Survivors also include her brothers, Sumner and Robert Steinberg of Massachusetts and their families.
The Carvel family would like to thank the staff of both Foreside Harbor and Seaside Nursing Home for the care and support they provided.
A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 22, 2013 at The Levey Chapel, 471 Deering Ave., Portland. Interment to follow at Temple Beth El Memorial Park. Arrangements by The Jewish Funeral Home, Portland.
