Theodore Coxe Obituary

Theodore Stafford Coxe, age 82, an attorney for more than 55 years, died on March 3, 2010, after an illness of several months. He had been a resident of Gladwyne since 1955, and he practiced trusts and estates law, most recently in Rosemont. Born in Philadelphia on May 21, 1927, when the headlines that day were of Charles Lindbergh's famous flight across the Atlantic, Ted graduated from the William Penn Charter School in 1945. He attended the United States Merchant Marine Academy and entered Yale University in January 1947, where he joined Zeta Psi fraternity. Under the N.R.O.T.C. program, he graduated from Yale in 1950 and was commissioned an Ensign in the Naval Reserve. He received an LL.B. from the Law School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1953 and was a member of the Sharswood Law Club. Upon graduation from Penn, Ted practiced law with his father, Joseph Kinsler Coxe, in the Germantown section of Philadelphia. In 1993, he moved his practice to the Main Line. He was a member of the Philadelphia and Pennsylvania Bar Associations. Ted's love of sports encompassed golf, skiing and squash, as well as tennis, skating, sailing and fishing. He was many times squash champion of the Philadelphia Country Club and served on numerous committees there. He also was a member of the Divotee Golf Club, the Fergarwe Golf Group, the Philadelphia Skating Club and Humane Society, and the Pastorius Club. Over the years, he served on the boards of Germantown Hospital, Germantown Boys Club, Colonial Germantown, Lycoming House, Hood Cemetery (Lower Burial Ground), Hamilton Reliance Savings Association, and Public Finance Service, Inc. He was a member of St. Christopher's Episcopal Church in Gladwyne. He is survived by Marjorie (Jerry) Clarke Coxe, his wife of nearly 55 years, and their children: Julie C. Freund (Daniel) of South Freeport, Me.; Louise C. Ballantyne (John) of Greensboro, N.C.; Hugh M. Coxe (Colleen) of Falmouth, Maine.; and Theodore S. Coxe, Jr. (Polly) of Bryn Mawr, Pa. Also surviving are seven grandchildren: Jacob and Hugh Freund; Nancy, Ian and Marjorie Ballantyne; and Henry and Caroline Coxe. Relatives and friends are invited to a memorial service on Saturday, March 13, 2010 at 11 a.m. at St. Christopher's Church, 226 Righters Mill Road, Gladwyne. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the William Penn Charter School, 3000 W. School House Lane, Philadelphia, PA 19144, or to a charity of one's choice. So sorry to hear of Ted's passing, he was such a vibrant and kind man. He was a great friend to my father and mother, and such a help when dad died. My thoughts and hugs go out to Jerry and the whole family.
