Joseph F. Murtha

Joseph F. Murtha 103 years of age passed away on January 25, 2026. He was the beloved husband of the late Helen C. Murtha and devoted father of Mary Margaret Kimble (Steve), Helene C. Murtha, Catherine A. Scott, Joseph Murtha (Teri), and Theresa Hoke (Jim). Loving grandfather of Stephen Kimble (Stephanie Casey), Sister Mary Joy of Martyrs Kimble SSVM, Shawn Scott(Erin), Cody Scott, Glen Scott, Martha Leigh Hoke and Krista Murtha. Great-grandfather of Lillian Kimble and Sophia Kimble.

Joe was born and raised in Philadelphia. While in grade school he and his family, like many, were faced with the Great Depression. Joe found himself working at a young age selling pretzels and candy to help the family get through the challenging times. He attended the local Catholic grade school and went on to graduate from North Catholic High School. After high school he began a career path working in the railroad industry. Like many men his age, that

journey was interrupted by the war. Joe enlisted in the Navy and became a Corpsman for the Marine Corps and was deployed to the Pacific theater to serve his country, which he did with courage. After being shot while engaged in providing medical assistance to the troops, he was hospitalized and returned to the states. He picked up where he left off by continuing his work in the railroad industry. In addition to working full time Joe attended night school at the University of Pennsylvania, obtaining a bachelor's degree. His career in the transportation industry took him from Philadelphia to New York, and finally Maryland, where he became a manager of the regional office. He was a devoted husband and father who found joy in his life by spending time with his family.

Family will receive friends at the Sacred Heart of Glyndon Catholic Church 63 Sacred Heart Lane Reisterstown, MD 21136 on Thursday February 5th from 10:00am – 11:00am. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Sacred Heart of Glyndon Catholic Church on Thursday February 5th at 11:00am. Interment in All Saints' Cemetery
