Edward P. Murtha

Edward P. Murtha, Jr. of Newington, husband of Ellen B. Murtha, died on January 18, 2026. Murtha was born in Bristol, CT on July 19, 1940, son of Edward and Lucy (Breen) Murtha.

He grew up in Hartford, attending St. Augustine School, Bulkeley High School, and the University of Hartford. A Navy veteran, he served in the Public Information Office of Commander Task Force 140 and participated in the Gemini missions at the Kennedy Space Center and the Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston.

Active in the community life of Newington, he served as Chairman of the Newington Housing Authority, and as a Democratic member of the Town Council and Board of Education.

In his later years, he was able to pursue his interest in basketball as the Recruiting Coordinator for Women's Basketball at Suffolk University and Albertus Magnus College.

He is survived by his wife, Ellen, children Kevin (Melanie), Chris (Tory) and Allison (Doug), grandchildren Jared, Dylan, Lauren, Kyle and Gavin. He was predeceased by his granddaughter Halyn.

Calling hours will be held at the Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, 34 Beaver Rd. Wethersfield, on Saturday, January 31, 2026, from 11:00 am to 1:30 pm, followed by a service in the funeral home at 1:30 pm. Burial will be private and held at a later date.
