Albert Newbill Obituary

Albert James Newbill

ASHLAND: Albert James Newbill, 90, of Ashland, OH, passed away December 11, 2011, at Belmont Tower of Brethren Care Center in Ashland. He was born January 13, 1921 to Hollie Mary Owen and Albert Glenn Newbill in Springfield, Missouri.

Al was raised in Detroit and studied at the Society of Arts and Crafts and Cass Technical High School. He served in the Army Air Corp in World War II. After his discharge he attended The Brooklyn Museum School of Art, The Hans Hoffman School of Fine Art, and the New School of Social Research in New York for no credits on the GI Bill. He remained in New York for fifteen years amid the exciting atmosphere generated by the abstract expressionist.

Al was first known as an art critic for Art Digest and Pictures on Exhibition. He was a panel participant at the Artist Club and Riverside Art Museum, NYC. He was recommended for his first teaching appointment at Queens College by John Ferren. Al was a visiting artist at Southern Illinois University and University of California at Berkley. He was a guest lecturer in painting and drawing at University of Kansas and an assistant professor of art at O.S.U. Mansfield. In the mid-sixties was director of art program, New Bedford, Mass. In 1978 Al was a visiting critic in painting and drawing at Cornell University. In a statement for one of his exhibits Al said, "Art should make the insignificant significant, the familiar unfamiliar, and the usual unusual."

Mr. Newbill's work has been exhibited in numerous group shows at prestigious institutions around the country.

His solo exhibitions include the Creative Gallery, the Leo Castelli Gallery, Parma Gallery, ALL N.Y.C., and the Holland-Goudowsky Gallery, Chicago. Locally he exhibited in Ashland College and the Mansfield Art Center.

Mr. Newbill is survived by many former students and also treasured friends, Bradley Parsons, Dane Donohue, and Dan Gagich, all of whom wish to thank the staff of Essex House, Brethren Care Village, and Hospice of North Central Ohio. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

I met Al when I attended OSU in Mansfield in 1972. We became friends and I enjoyed his friendship over the years. I last saw Al in 2010 in Ashland Ohio and knew he was not in good health but we drank beer together and spoke of old times. He aspired to organize his many thoughts on art and life and his art work was as exciting as ever. I am deeply sorry to hear of his passing and will miss his cantankerous personality. Al was helpful and generous in his life to me, giving my wife and I a painting for a wedding present, I will miss him and wish I had known about his passing sooner. Rick Felber
