Very sorry to find out about Michael's passing. He was a professor and mentor to me during my MFA tenure at AAU. He inspired me to be creative and dedicated to the craft. He and his family are in my thoughts and prayers.

I am so sorry to hear this sad news. I was lucky, and fortunate enough to have Mr. Helmy for two semesters at Academy of art U. He was far and away the kindest, and most helpful Professor I have ever encountered in all the years and hours spent persuing my education. The film world has lost one of the greats, and I am saddened to think we won't see his work in the future. Mr. Helmy, may you forever rest in peace.

Michael was my mentor. Just found out about his passing as I am in the Army in Soth Korea, doing what he taught me.

I had two classes with Michael at the Academy of Art University. He was such a joy to be around and taught me so much. I use much of what he taught me to this very day. Rest in Peace sir. I will always remember you. Thanks for everything

I met Michael in the convalescent hospital where I would visit my Mother daily. On his better days he would share stories about his film days and I shared mine about working in the theater. We knew a few of the same people. Mom and I enjoyed our brief visits. It wasn't easy for him to talk and I wished we would have met before because he had such an interesting life. RIP Michael. I hope you are in a better place.

So sad to get this news. My most lasting memory of Michael was visiting him in New York City in the early 80's, his appartment floor covered with bit of paper as he composed his book. And the ironing board, he always ironed his shirt ritualisticly. We also shared the storm of the century when he came with his family to visit for Christmas 1999. He refused to be smoked out of the guest house when the high winds blew the smoke down the chiminy of the wood stove. "They can't smoke me out!" I'll alway remember him screaming that as he fought through the storm back to the cottage.
