George Nager Obituary

George Nager, 91, died on Thursday, November 06, 2014 in West Hartford, CT. Born in Brooklyn, NY, George enlisted in the Army during World War II and was assigned to assist the French resistance, and was awarded a Medal of Honor from France for his service to the citizens of France. When George returned from the war he attended New York University on the G I Bill where he received a Bachelor of Science in Geology and then went on to graduate from Brooklyn Law School. George established a general law practice in Nassau County in New York State. He was a zealous advocate for the downtrodden. A fervent believer in the United States Constitution, civil liberties and democracy, George argued and won a case before the United States Supreme Court. Because of his fluency in Spanish he took on a case on behalf of immigrants which was a seminal case in New York State protecting consumers from predatory adhesion contracts in rent to own agreements. An active member of the Nassau County and New York State Bar Associations, he continued to use the law as an instrument to protect the rights of the common man. George is survived by his wife of 64 years, Pauline (Polly) Nager, a daughter Andrea (Jonathan) Chasen, of Longmeadow, MA, a son Leslie Nager, of West Springfield, MA, two grandchildren Adam Chasen of Brooklyn NY and Elissa Chasen of Madison Wisconsin, a brother Harvey(Lenore) Nager and nieces and nephews. Contributions can be made to the ACLU, Masonicare Partners Home Health and Hospice 111 Founders Plaza, Suite 200, West Hartford CT, Jewish Family Services of Western MA, 15 Lenox St, Springfield, MA 01108, or the charity of your choice.

I remember George and Polly when they lived in Levittown, NY. I'll never forget their kindness to me and my brother Rick when we were younger, and my grandmother was hospitalized. They watched over us when my parents had to go visit grandma in the hospital.

I found Mr. Nager's obituary while trying to reach out to him or his law office. I am so sorry to hear he has passed away--I wish I could have known him as a person rather than just as a lawyer who possibly had helped my grandmother, Catherine Walters, in the late 1980s who lived in Levittown after my grandfather Harold's death in 1976. My siblings and I have fond memories of visiting Levittown throughout our childhood. My condolences to the family.

I grew up with the Nager children Andrea and Leslie in Levittown, NY. I also knew Polly and George and remember their crazy beagle Pepper. I am so sorry for their loss. George lived a long and fulfilling life. I did not realize he was a WWII hero.
