George Ressler Obituary

George Thomas Ressler
George Thomas Ressler, 67, of New Tripoli, died Wednesday, September 8, at New Hanover Trauma Center in Wilmington, NC. He was on vacation with family and friends at Top Sail Island, NC when he became ill and was taken to the Trauma Center. George was born in Philadelphia, PA to Thomas G. Ressler and Adah Patterson Ressler Kelly, both of whom predeceased him. He lived most of his life in the Allentown area, and was a graduate of Allentown High School and Kutztown University. He served in the US Navy in the early 1960s and was a ships photographer on the USS Essex which was an active participant in the Cuban Missile Crisis. Following his Naval service, George become a commercial photographer, but upon graduation from Kutztown University, became a special education teacher in Intermediate Unit 20 School District of Northampton County. There he taught gifted students as well as children with learning disabilities. He retired in 2002. Among his many activities were the Boy Scouts in which he took part while a photographer and continued into his retirement. At one time he was the scoutmaster for two troops, one in Bethlehem and one in Allentown. He served several summers as the camp director at Camp Trexler, Brodheadsville, and, at the time of his death was the treasurer of Boy Scout Troop 89 of New Tripoli. His troops were popular with the boys especially because he loved to take his troops camping and taught them the art of campfire cooking, including the baking of cakes. He also took his troops to historic sites such as Washington, DC and Gettysburg, PA. He was a certified rifle instructor and taught many Scouts how to handle rifles with proper attention to safety. Although he never married, George was a foster father to many boys, most of them placed by the childrens home in Topton, PA. He parented dozens of boys for more than 20 years, and eventually adopted six boys who have since grown into adulthood. There are many young men in the Lehigh Valley and elsewhere in the nation who owe him a debt of gratitude for his care, guidance, and efforts to change their lives for the better. Georges friends and family often referred to him as a gentlemen farmer for his love of farming. He particularly loved to grow tomatoes and would often make and can tomato juice which he supplied to friends and family. He kept at least a years supply for himself. At Thanksgiving, when he prepared a meal for family and friends, most of the food on the table, including the turkey, were things he had grown himself. Over the years he kept chickens, geese, ducks, turkeys, rabbits, sheep, pigs, and dogs-especially dogs. He loved German Shepherds and had four of them as house pets at the time of his death. Survivors: George is survived by his six sons, George T. Jr., of the home, Timothy R., of San Diego, CA, David T., of Allentown, David G., of Pittsburgh, PA, Adam T. and Kody T. of the home. Also surviving are three sisters, Mary Ann Roeder of Slatington, PA, Carolyn M. Goepfert, of Southampton, MA, and Elinor R. Aye, of Neffs, PA. George also had four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, as well as 10 nieces and nephews; 18 grand-nieces and nephews. He will be sorely missed by family and friends. Services: Final arrangement details are pending. Contributions: In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to Boy Scout Troop 89 of New Tripoli, c/o Jason Grim, 6039 Powder Horn Court, New Tripoli, PA 18066.

George and I were good friends in high school. My mother worked around the corner from George's house on 12th street. We walked together after school and even though I was one of the fastest runners in school I could not keep up with his fast walking. He kept laughing at me and telling me to keep up. George was a good friend.

I never met George, but I am married to one of his former Boy Scouts, Jeff. Jeff's two brothers were also scouts in George's troop. At Christmastime, as we sit around recounting fond memories, those guys always bring up George Ressler, "did I ever tell you about George Ressler?" and then someone chuckles. I've heard about his steak dinners at cook-outs, camping in snow, and throwing canned goods into the campfire waiting for the can to explode! Come on! That stuff never happened in Scouts! ;0) Our son, also a Boy Scout knows many George stories. George's legacy lives on.

To George's Family, Please accept my deepest condolences in the loss of your father and my friend. I had the pleasure of being George's secretary (yes, they did give George a secretary at the IU-20, once upon a time) and I have to say my time with George was the best. He was honest and fair and didn't put on any airs. He loved working with children and he had a very special gift with children of special needs. He will be remembered with great fondness and will be missed tremendously. May God keep you in his grace.

I met his sisters and other relatives. I
always enjoyed the "spirited" conversations we had over the years. He will be missed.

It is with a sad heart and tears in my eyes that I write this note.
I’d like to talk about a hero, not national ones such as statesmen, presidents, sports or war heroes, but one in particular who influenced (hundreds?) of young men’s lives, including mine. George.
My 3 brothers and I were scouts in Troop #127 in the early 70’s thru early 80’s. George was our young Scout Master and eventual mentor. He managed 2 troops at the time, worked a full schedule as a teacher, and was also earning a degree AND bringing up young men. Yet he still found time for us.
He took us camping at least 1 weekend per month and even built a campsite for us in Orefield. We called it Raccoon Hollow. He taught us to build a bridge over the creek, design a dam for a swimming hole, make a homemade shower (with some buckshot and an old pail), and even build a latrine! Both his Bethlehem and Allentown troops shared this site.
On many camping trips, George taught us how to cook…grilled chicken, steaks (medium rare only), peach cobbler in the dutch oven, Russian salad dressing from scratch, Mulligatawny Stew, cheese omelets, … the list goes on. Each summer, the highlight was spending a week with him at Camp Trexler, memories that I will never forget. He taught us how to enjoy life to its fullest.
George was always willing to share his point of view with you. I learned to respect guns and the NRA, understood the value of respect for our elders, appreciated photography and computers, learned never to skimp on hoagie ingredients (only $0.60 from the Boy Scouts!), and learned all about girls (…sic).
Whenever I return to Allentown and run into old friends, we always share a chuckle about George. Mentor, Scout Master. Hero.
(PS My brother Bill is waiting for you in heaven. He needs someone to shoot clay birds with.)

I never met George. I am a friend of his sister, Carolyn's, in MA. I joined Carolyn on a trip to George's beach house on Topsail Island this past April. Carolyn was telling me about George and his having been in the Navy. I had the privilege of speaking (actually bantering) with him on the phone. I kidded him about his having to salute me when we met because I left the military after 10 years at the rank of Commander. George's response---"Screw that--ha, ha, ha!!" I KNEW we would get along well. My prayers to his family, I know he will be greatly mised.

September 18, 2010

I have had the pleasure to know and love Dad for the last 11 years . I will miss our talks and the good times I was fortunate to have with him . I will love him forever and hold his love in my heart. Dad was a great man and accomplished his goals through love and his sincere commitment to his family and friends . May the family pull together through this tragic time and the rest of our lives the way Dad wanted.

With deepest condolense to our family and Dad's friends. May we all unite with Dad in heaven someday.

I met George Ressler years ago when I was a Scout and he was young and in charge of Camp Trexler, BSA. I am not sure of the year or years when he was in charge of the camp but I turned 50 this year. George was all about the out doors and was willing to teach young people about nature, survival and the ways of Scouting. When my boys were of age I introduced them to Cub Scouting and then Boy Scouts. Wouldn't you know it, George Ressler was still there and willing to teach my boys also. George left behind a legacy in Scouting and teaching others. May God bless George and may the heavens be opened to him. George will be missed by many, RIP George.

I had the opportunity to work with George at IU #20 in the late 1980s into the early 1990s. I was a supervisor of various programs for the IU at that time and he helped me with his vast knowledge of the IU Gifted program and technology services. He was very generous with his time and always had a smile on his face as he worked with you on various projects. He will be greatly missed by family and friends. Please accept my deepest sympathy and condolences on your loss.
