Erwin Walz Obituary
May 21, 1920 – December 3, 2020
Resident of Cupertino
Born the oldest of four children near Ashley, North Dakota, Erwin graduated from Ashley High School in 1937 and continued at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, and Wartburg Theological Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa, graduating in January 1945. In 1976, he received his Doctorate of Ministry degree from Glendale School of Theology.
He served as pastor at churches in California: in La Mesa, San Jose, Placentia and Los Altos from 1945 until retiring in 1986. He continued as Visitation Pastor at Bethel Lutheran Church, Cupertino, for 14 years, officially retiring in 2007.
He met and married Vivian Hurtig in 1952. After selling their home in Sunnyvale, he and Vivian moved to Sunny View Retirement Community in Cupertino in October 2007, where he lived until his death on December 3rd.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Vivian, their children Gayle, Janice and Gary, and grandson Christopher. He will be remembered as a loving and caring pastor, husband, father and grandfather. He was buried at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Los Altos on December 10th.
