Fred Laccabue Obituary

Fred C. Laccabue
Resident of Cupertino
Born in Chicago, IL on May 26, 1933 to James Ronald Laccabue, Sr. and Mary Ann Gassi, Fred passed away at home in Cupertino, CA December 11, 2014 with his family at his side.
Fred graduated early from St. Mel High School and spent a semester at St. Mary's College, Winona, MN before attending the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where he received a B.A. in Mathematics. He was so proud when son, Michael, also graduated from UIUC in 2012.
Fred always had a strong work ethic. Delivering groceries for the Hamlin corner market at age 9 was just the beginning of his successful 70-year career. He was a born manager, starting at the Alex Theatre in Chicago as a teenager, then running the kitchen at Newman Hall where he lived throughout his U of I years.
Upon graduation, Fred left for San Diego to begin his professional career at Convair/General Dynamics. While there, his love of music gave him the great opportunity to sing with the Robert Shaw Chorale. San Diego, where he especially enjoyed deep-sea fishing and golf, would become one of his two favorite places in the world, and it later became a second home to both Michelle and Michael.
In the early '60s, Fred worked for Control Data Corporation, where he eventually settled in his other favorite place – the San Francisco Bay Area, calling Cupertino home. CDC was the lead contractor for the Air Force's Advanced Logistics System of the Air Force Logistics Command; Fred managed the project for many years from the pre-bid stage until late in the project. Fred loved almost any card game, but it was a poker game started between him and some CDC friends on a Friday night in 1966 that not only became a tradition, but legend. Those games continue today with many of the same buddies. The last game was in February and Fred was there.
Fred held management positions in many companies in the computer systems industry, including Fairchild/Schlumberger and Tandem/Compaq/HP, from where he retired as VP of HP's NonStop Systems Development in 2012.
Fred loved life and had an energy, curiosity and determination that could at times be hard to keep up with. Trite but true, his mantra was "accentuate the positive" whether at home or work, and was put to the test on more than one occasion, as many of his colleagues will attest to. He understood the business, was dedicated and honest with his employees and customers, and treated everyone fairly. Always, Fred was a gentleman. Those traits produced many friendships throughout the years that continue today. His life was a weave of people, experiences, and situations that made for endless interesting and entertaining stories.
Fred's other passions included food and sports. In addition to frequenting his favorite restaurants, not only for the food but also the friendships he made over the years, he enjoyed cooking and was known to name his best recipes after himself. Overcoming polio as a teen, he loved playing golf and racquetball, especially when beating younger opponents. The family spent many vacations together golfing at Singing Hills. Fred also shared his passion for cycling with Michael. They rode their bikes together most weekends, leading Michael to later ride centuries and assistant manage the Cupertino Bike Shop.
Devoted to his family, he is survived by his wife Michelle, their son Michael, mother Mary Ann, brother James Ronald, Jr., nieces and nephews, sharing a special bond with nephew and buddy, Jim, children Brenna, Julie, Fred Jr., Ronald, Steven, Susan, and Joseph, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Private services. Donations may be made to Hospice of the Valley, 4850 Union Ave., San Jose, CA 95124, with special thanks to Judy and Margarita for their superb and compassionate care.

I didn't have the pleasure of being around Fred (Mr. Laccabue) for a very long time.

I never once doubted your genuine quality when I was around you. You treated me with such care and friendliness, even showing an interest in my well-being and life, and I'm not even sure if the last time I hugged you goodbye that I knew it would be the last. Although I only had a short year with you, I was sad to hear about your passing. Thank you for the wonderful memories, especially those of you sharing your favorite classics with me in the study. You are missed.

Our belated condolences to the Laccabue family. I stopped by to see my daddy tonight who remembered Fred as his lifelong best friend. From St. Mel's to University of Illinois and long beyond. Enjoyed meeting him over the years. Julie Baumgartner Brandis

Fred hired me into cdc in 1964 and was my manager for my early FORTRAN years. I didn't see him much as he was already a second level manager. But as a manager and leader he got us what we needed to complete our assignments and treated us all fairly and with respect. Later in the Poker Game was when we became friends. I was one friend who contributed much to his bank account. He truly "knew when to hold 'em, knew when to fold 'em." And I have many Laccabue stories from the last fifty years.

When we were little Dad told us kids that if we saved up half the money for a television set he would pay the other half. After two years and by the age of 9, saving my allowance, I would finally have $36 for half. It was an exciting day with Dad and I came home with a small black and white, complete with antennae ears. A few years later, Dad would loan me money to help me purchase my third home. I was short on the down payment and needed a bit extra. Dad did not believe in handouts, he believed in hard work and earning your way, so it was a business deal, with a promissory note and accrued interest. Most importantly, he trusted me with that loan, and also reinforced in me that if I wanted something I would need to work hard for it. Thanks to Dad and his guidance and example, I have always been a good saver, a smart investor, and financially independent. This guidance would lead me to a career in business and a later a B.S. in Business with an Accounting concentration. Although dad could not be at my graduation this year, in spite of learning of his illness, he still made the effort to congratulate me and express his pride in my achievements. Thank you for encouraging me to be a strong, independent, and hard-working woman. Rest peacefully Dad. I love you.

I remember so many wonderful family moments with Freddie. Many were in Sault Ste. Marie when he would visit with his Mom and Dad in our early years of growing up. I also remember when my Mom took me to Chicago when I was about 5 years old and we had fun times. Freddie always made me laugh. To celebrate my parents 50th Anniversary we made a trip to Cupertino to see my Dad's sister, Auntie Annie. Freddie and Michelle were generous hosts and Michael was about 8 years old and thinking about playing the piano. At my parents' 60th Anniversary Freddie was in the Sault again and it was great to have him there with Michelle and Michael. Even though he lived a full and beautiful life it's still too soon to say good-bye, but he will live in the hearts of many. Sincere sympathy and love to all of the family. May he rest in peace knowing he is embraced by God's eternal love. With love, cousin Gloria Gassi

There are so many highlights in my growing up years that include Freddie! My "big" cousin who always looked at you like you were the only person in the room. I believe he was very proud of his heritage and every time he came to our humble little town he was like a sponge trying to soak up each moment to charish for another day. A generous man who despite his station in life talked to all as an equal. I can't imagine hearing a wonderful violin solo, or opera without remembering with love my dear cousin. May he rest in peace!

In many ways he was the best manager I ever had. His perpetual smile made him a frightening opponent at the poker table. Fifty years is a long time for a poker game. I hope you find one on the other side.

Dad was an amazing man and I'm proud to be his son. While I was with him at the end, holding his hand as he passed from this world, I can only wish I had more time to share with him, to learn from him. He was a good man with incredible integrity, energy, and spirit. Thanks, Dad, for all you contributed to my life and to our world. You made a huge impact on my life and on our society! You will be missed... every single day! Your friend and son...

Fred was a very special man who always greeted me warmly and made me feel as if I were a member of his family, even after I wasn't. I will always remember his big smile and sweet spirit. He was a loving grandfather to my children and we will miss him. I'm sending my love and condolences to Michelle, Mary Ann, Ron, and all of the Laccabue kids and grandkids during this hard time.
